My Becker Family just doubled!

I picked up a BK14 about a month and a half ago or so, and followed it with a BK7. Due to my school and work schedule, I've not had a chance to do anything with either, but I'm mulling some ideas over in my head, so we'll see what happens. As a result of how much I enjoy those two, I've been thinking real hard about getting a BK17, and have almost pulled the trigger a time or two, but I felt like something kept telling me to wait.

Well, perhaps I found out why. :) I was trolling the for sale section of a popular firearms website, and stumbled upon an ad for an ESEE 5 and a BK9/BK13 combo. The ESEE looked nice, but I jumped on the BK9/13. Aside from the knives, I got the factory sheath, and a set of micarta handles for the BK9. The price? It was originally $80, but when I met up with the guy (he happened to live down the road from the school I'm at right now), he told me he felt his description was a little misleading, and dropped the price to $60! I about croaked! I asked him if he was sure that's what he wanted to do (I'm not one to take advantage of someone), and he was positive that he was OK with the price. So I just doubled my Becker family for the low price of $60! The BK13 Remora is TINY!

So now the question is, where do I begin modding? LOL. I'd like to do all kinds of things to the BK14 (add jimping, MAYBE strip it, grind it into a drop point, etc), but the others I'm not sure about. I originally picked up the 14 and 7 to try my hand at making scales, so perhaps I'll start there and see where that takes me. :)

And yes, I'll have pics up this evening after work. Gotta head out the door right now, though.

LUCKY DOG!!! I would love to come across a deal like that! Congrats on a great score & on getting the King in your house. It's next on my list as soon as business picks up.

Where to begin modding?

First off, scratch off some of that nice coating... The old-fashioned way. Just go terrorize the forest for a while and enjoy the knives before you commit to changing them. Also, micarta and a 550 cord lanyard is a good call.

"The BK13 Remora is TINY!" LMAO I just got a 13 in the mail and thought the same exact thing. It is a very cool little knife. For some reason I thought it would be a little bigger. no complaints tho. I bought mine separate for the 9's sheath. Nice score!

Alright, pic is up. Figured I didn't need a whole ton of them since, well, they look like any other factory Becker for right now.

RKMoore, yep! Lucked out on this one for sure! Love the heft and balance of the BK9 so far, though I've done nothing other than mess around with it.

C10Darren, not much forest around these parts, though if I traveled a few hours north, I'd have plenty to mess with. I'm thinking a weekend camping trip or 10 will be in order this fall when a) I have a wee bit more time, and b) it cools off some. Right now, I'm pretty well swamped with work and school, but my father has some land that he visits from time to time, so I'll have to co-ordinate with him to see what we can pull off. Down here, I could probably find something to hack away at, but it would be slow going. Either way, I'll likely let them build character through wear, perhaps with the exception of the 14, but we'll see. Something I DO think I'll do soon, however, is put the micarta to a bit of sand paper to give it a bit more grip, and round off a few edges that don't flow as well with the rest of the scales. Pretty minor stuff, but it's noticeable to me, so I'll start there.

TMan038, yeah, I always figured it would be bigger (never seen an in-hand pic, so maybe I'll take one of those next), but no complaints here. It's a great companion to the BK9, though, since it'll allow you to handle much smaller tasks with plenty of precision, and if it were much bigger, it would be competing with the BK11/14. I find it perfect just the way it is. :)
