My Belt Kit..., Need your input on it..

Ok folks,

Let me say this upfront, this is NOT ALL OF MY MAIN KIT... It's merely some of what takes up the most room, and what'll most likely be accessed the most..

First, I want to thank 'Maglight', a great fellow from another forum, for the idea(he's the first I saw that came up with it ).. Not sure if he's on this forum or not, but wanna give him the "props", that he deserves..

The list of what's being carried on my belt kit :

1 - Guyot with enameled cup (one pouch)(cooking, or boiling water to drink)

1 - 10' x 12'(i think) tarp(shelter)

1 - heavy duty emergency blanket(not sure of dimensions but its a 2 person)

1 - water bottle(for this pic), or canteen or another guyot

and a hatchet or axe(I can switch them out)..

The pouches also have smaller pockets.. So far, I've added an extra compass, and thats about it.. I'm thinking of adding a small fire kit, or a small FAK to it .. From what I have right now, I'm thinking I could possibly add a little ammo (for a 22, or airgun or whatever), or other stuff... Right now I'm not sure:confused:... I may just leave them empty for collecting tinder...

Looking forward to your input and ideas...

TIA

Tux

lol, nice belt kit dude. i'm curious though, isnt that a bit heavy? the only thing i could see being a problem is the weight shift while running or moving fast, possibly even when you have to do some climbing.

You've got some good stuff, and if you're willing to haul around that kind of bulk and wieght for a big tarp and a big blanket, good for you. It's just I wouldn't do it, especially for a belt kit.

If you've got an enameled cup you could cut alot of weight by replacing the other bottles with platapus bags. Still be able to boil in the cup.

Actually it's not heavy at all.. I haven't anchored things downs yet.. I'm still working on orienting things for that same reason of having to run if need be ..

After trying it on the first time, I know my axe(or hatchet) will have to be moved.. Other then that, its pretty comfy feeling.. Gonne take it out for a hike, in the next few days to see how it feels, on a mile or so hike...

Sorry but I'm just not a fan of the water bags as of yet, plus the cup is a 16 ouncer, so I can use it for cooking if need be... It takes 2 cups , from that enameled cup to fill my guyot..

awesome kit IMO - you've got everything you actually need to make yourself comfortable. Two things I'd add are fire (which you mentioned) and lots of cordage.

I'd take your kit over a Altoids-sized PSK any day

The cordage stays in my main bag.. I set up a 550 kit similar to IAW, in his video.. This is mainly to get all the bulk(crap that takes up a lot of room) stuff out my bag.. The only thing(bulky), now that'll stay in my bag will be a wool blanket...

Thanks :)

I would add a small light or headlamp, a couple of snacks, and maybe a few matches + a tea candle.

Was definitely thinking of a caplight(can't wear headlamps), and a few extra battery packs to go with it.. They'd fit quite nicely in one of the side pouches.. Didn't think about tea candles, gonna try a fit check to see how if they'll work.. I was looking at maybe a rope lighter and/or flint and steel also.. Maybe a firesteel ???

Thanks:thumbup:

You could always wear the tarp as a cape and save room on the belt!!!:D

Do you wear it with suspenders/a harness? Just me, but especially with two water bottles, I'd want something to keep it from sagging too much. Other than that I think most of what should be included in a kit like this has been said, fire kit and cord for sure. I'd also add a signal mirror and a whistle or something for signalling.

Some valuable components although looks bulky to carry around your waist when considering walking between/around/under trees and rocks. Hard to know what to add without knowing what your primary kit components are and what area it is designed for?

great kit. the only thing I would change is I would trade the hatchet for a folding silky saw.

It's in my main kit. Was too long, and didn't have a way to strap it on, that I felt comfortable with...:(

Looks great :)

Just something to consider for those long hikes, you might want to stop by your local outdoor shop and grab an extra main clip (the one that snaps and keeps your belt on you). We were taught that in scouts and it actually did come in handy for one of our guys on a two week trip. I'm sure you won't be doing two+ week trips with it, but if it does give out or you step on it after you've set it down for a break, etc....it would be nice to be able to fix it up right away so you won't have to carry it out.

Just my .02 take care, J.

I like it, but belts and butt packs don't seem to work for me (I'm kind of long a and lean). I think you have some pretty practical gear there..
