My Benchmade Needs New Scales

Guys,

One of my favorite wet climate field blades needs some decent micarta scales and I was wondering if you could recommend a maker I can engage to help?

As you can see, it has a raised and angled tang in that the handles don't go flush to the edge of the tang, but I can continue to live with that. Just looking for black micarta handles that can possibly reuse the screws. This one is a user.

Any help is appreciated,

I'm sure somebody on this forum will help you with that, but why not try it yourself? Worst case you waste some time and materials. You won't ruin the knife making replacement scales.

One of my first forays into making knives was re-scaling a Gerber Vector I got for my birthday. I liked the knife, hated the skeletonized grip.

I used 3/16" black G10, a coping saw to cut it, and my flex-shaft (a Dremel would do) to shape the new scales. Once I got started, I decided to "de-horn" the corners on the frame and clean up the overall profile a bit. I ended up with a lot more time invested than the knife is really worth, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

"This is my Gerber. There are none like it, and this one is MINE."

Next project: replace the blade with something that'll actually hold an edge. :\

I'm thinking about it, Doc, but I don't have any tools out where I am right now. I'd also like to reuse or use screws as opposed to pins, which I presume requires even more tools (counter-sink, etc). It's still a consideration though.

Thanks for the recommendation.

That is a sweet looking knife. I don't understand the need to replace the scales. What's the problem with what is on it now? Micarta scales would look really snazzy but wouldn't have the checkering of the originals and this would make the handle a lot slipperier than the stock scales in a wet climate.

and... we really just want you to try your hand at making the handle yourself in hopes that you get hooked on making knives.

I don't have anything to add as far as new scales goes but I'm glad to see someone giving some love to the Fixed Grip. It doesn't get much around here it seems. I had one and sold it to finance something else and every time I see one I want to buy another one. It's a knife that speaks to me.
