That's a pretty incredible story, props to your friend for coming out of it with a positive attitude, and inspiring others.

Surviving such an ordeal is like surviving Life--it's all about attitude! And what we choose to do with the time and energy and resources and knowledge we have.

I once met a salmon fishing guide in AK who when he flew by bush plane wore a serious heavy duty jacket. The large cargo pockets were stuffed with survival gear. I asked him about it and he said that there have been a number of instances in which people survived a plane crash but perished from exposure, etc. Sometimes it was because their gear was lost with the floatplane (fire, sinking, etc.). This guide wanted to make sure that if he survived a crash, he'd have a decent chance of staying alive until rescue.
