So I won off the bay a very large, extremely well made "Smithsonian" style bowie knife. Bought it for cheap off a fella that had a bunch of stuff for sale. The blade is etched with supposedly the makers name and country of origin. Now I knew what I was getting before bidding and all that stuff. Never heard of the maker and couldn't find anything on the individual on line. But I've lusted after this style of bowie for quite sometime for no other reason than to display on the mantel of my living room. So not expecting to much as to quality of build etc.etc. especially for the price paid.

Well I gotta tell ya whomever made this knife knew what they were doing. It is of excellent quality with a very fine attention to detail. Everything is a hair line fit with excellent finish to the blade itself and the guard and pommel. Now this is not an exact copy of the Randall made knife by any stretch, this is a full flat grind with a convex edge with a very slight drop to the stacked leather handle. The sheath is similar in style but not near the quality of the Randall sheath but this one is more than adequate for the purpose intended. There are no ripples in the blade which surprises me due to the fact that it is a big thick piece of steel but actually well done to say the least. Even choil and clip grinds. The plunge lines are excellent to and very even. The fittings are highly polished nickel silver I believe but could be s.s. or the like. Everything is very tight on the knife, no rattles or anything loose etc. The clip can't be sharpened by me anyways but maybe by someone with a belt grinder. The transitions on the knife from guard fit to the balance of the knife is spot on. I am quite surprised to say the least. I will also add that the knife if quite sharp and that a file(mill bastard) doesn't quite bite into the edge of the blade. Doesn't skid across it either. Kind of in between I would say.

So there ya have it my wall hanger bowie. Just bought to fill an itch and probably lucked out with a way better knife than I deserve especially considering the price. I'll try and link a pic or two of it. keepem sharp

Nice. You should check the edge hardness to see if it has been properly heat threated

Surprisingly (from the description), thats not a bad looking bowie at all.

Congrats.

The name that is etched on the blade is Andre Ronald from South Africa. I Binged him and found a couple of reviews written and done in video. The video was from an Italian fella I think so I couldn't understand it. I've stropped the edge a bit and it cleanly glides through rolled up newspaper. Will I ever use it? Nah. I'll have my brother come up with a stand for it so I can put it up on the mantle. I think I was just surprised at the quality of build actually. Mtter of fact I was more than surprised by the number of knives offered under this moniker. So I am assuming he isn't a real maker but more of a shadow figure. OK that's it. keepem sharp and thanks

Thanks for posting the bigger pic of it. I checked the edge with a file and although the file doesn't totally bite into the edge it doesn't skim off it either. Just makes a nice sound as it goes across the edge, which I don't know what you could make of it really but it seems hard enough I guess. It is sharp now though!

Thanks! According to other eBay descriptions, "Andre" uses D2 @ 58-60 HRC. If true, it would probably perform well. Nice knife, regardless!
