Today is my 40th birthday. Yesterday my wife set up something un-freaking-believable for me! My wife, my son, and me all got in the car and she had me put on a blindfold.... After a short bout of carsickness (due to being blindfolded) we arrived at a parking garage. We walked up the street to the house of blues here in Houston... My wife said she had to go back to the car to get something.... I honestly had no idea what we were doing there. She comes walking back up to me with my limited edition black label Mike Vallely skateboard. I said "what the hell are you doing with that?"
She said "we are here to see Black Flag. Mike Vallely is their singer now. He said he would meet you and sign your board after the show!" I was absolutely blown away! Black Flag is one of my favorite bands. Last I heard they were broken up. Mike Vallely is one of my heroes! When he came out on the skateboarding scene he was my instant favorite!
As we were watching the opening bands, one of the guys from house of blues said "hey, Mike is over at the merch table"... They were all in on it! My wife talked to them and set it all up.... What do you say to one of your idols?! I was so tongue tied and starstruck I almost passed out! I just blurted out a lot of stuff about how he has always been one of my idols, etc., shook his hand and wondered to the counter to buy a $9 PBR.... He said after the show he would talk with me for a while and sign my board!
Black Flag put on one hell of a show!!!!! Sooooo awesome! Mike was excellent as the singer! He knows the material, and is very passionate about it! He gave his all, as did the rest of the band! They expended every ounce of energy they had up there on the stage to put on an awesome show!
After they were done, they all jumped off stage and mingled with the crowd. I got to meet Mike Vallely! He signed my board and I got to talk to him. He is a very nice guy! Very down to earth, very appreciative and gracious, and very humble. He stood for a few pictures with me, my wife, and my son. I had the time of my life! I was walking on clouds man! It still fells like a dream to me!
Anyhow, just thought I would share the story of my best birthday present ever! My wife is really something else! My son helped plan it too, and he is my best friend for life! Such an awesome show, and such a special experience! I'll treasure this memory forever!
