Well, "Fat boy" -my BK 2- is earning it's keep working through the scrap bin making kindling for the stove here in the shop. The cutoff bin is about the last 4 month worth of scraps from gunstock prodction here in the shop. Actually, it's not all the scraps because all the nicely grained stuff that is big neough for knife scales etc was already sorted out. Almost all of this wood has been air dried over 10 years in the blank form before being bandsawed out.

The dregs that remain are pictured in this 30" round by 20" tall tub by the band saw. I burn some of the pretty firewood. Most of it is high grade walnut.

Much of the stuff is as hard as chrome plated wood pecker lips, but the BK2 is tougher. ;)The edge has been covexed and after going through abotu 1/3 of the bin, nary a brurr or roll can be found on it's edge. The 1095 Cro-Van steel holds up very well.:D

Wow. You are using some beautiful wood for kindling. Glad to here that the BK2 is up to the task. I was wondering what would happen if my knife were to encounter some dense wood like that.

Hey Jim......

I am always amazed at how long the edge on Cro-Van lasts at splitting stuff....I only wish my effing wood chisels retained an edge that long....The flex cuts come close.....I bet that stuff starts like it was soaked in diesel !!!!...I love it when I only have to use a little bit of the match......

All best....

Ethan,

Good to see you are back from SHOT in one piece.. :D

Yes- that dry Walnut burns very well. Your mention of Jim Knowka and yourself using your Knives to make one match fires each day was what got me started using the BK2 and other knives for processing kindling here in the shop. I keep dowel scraps and twigs to make feather sticks and start the fire each day with a Ferro rod. My Moras did most of it last year and this year is the Becker's turn.

My BK-7 is pawing in it's stall wanting a crack at that kindling, so it will have to get it's share this month as well. We had some warm weather here last week, but its as cold as a Well digger's feet here right now. Got to keep those fires lit... Brrr...
