My wife cut up some carrots and, afterwards, my BK-5 was green along the edge where it was in contact with the carrots. Still has the black coating - any ideas as to the cause?

Wash the blade, then dry,and strop lightly afterwards,it should take care of that.Or,maybe it was an alien carrot.:D

The high carbon steel is reacting to the acid in the carrots. So, yes, it was a chemical reaction. Get yourself a Case Sodbuster Jr. in CV steel, cut up some stuff, and watch it happen, or even a cheapo Mora in carbon steel. Different food will give you a different patina. Banana peels do it, citrus, mustard, etc. It's not hurting your knife or carrots. Some people like the look of patina on a blade. Others don't.

the only cure is to cut up some steak with it :)

then go split some fire wood :>

We've got knives. Just money and women.

OP the easiest way to remove it is with a scotch brite pad. Just scrub it gently and it'll go away

Cool, green patina, I likes it.

Kenash- welcome to the forum, make yourself at home, and be welcome.

A BK-5 that is allergic to carrots?!?! Somebody tell Ethan the world is coming to an end, and Chuck Norris
got a black eye while fighting an Oompa Loompa! Horrors!!

I'm sure the alien carrot theory is correct. I want to believe.

+1 on this. I'd really enjoy being part of the group once I meet all the qualifications. If being addicted to all this helps in being accepted I should not have too much trouble! LOL
