I picked up this new BK-5 a while back in a trade, after a quick google it seems to be a slightly older stamped one, is this right and if so when did they change?
I can't wait to get out and use it.

Yeah, they only did one run of laser etch, rough coat blades. I have a laser etched, and a roll stamped. You're good to go.

Yeah, it seems the etched version is the rareity in the case of the BK5...

This would be a great time to post a side by side of them! I only have roll stamped so I'm out...

I got a smooth paint roll stamped one a few months ago too. I think most out there are roll stamp

I too have a roll stamped. Didn't even know they did 'em in rough coating with the laser, but if there are pics they'd be appreciated! Love my 5!

That one looks good Godzilla, any plans for mods?

What...... Laser etched BK5s...... I have to add that to the list of my prey.

I do love the stamped BK5s - they just look awesome.

I recently got another 5 during the KaBar cash days hoping to get a laser etched . No such luck , oh well . I haven't seen any , but have herd about EM . The 5 is AWSOME !

i picked up 2 of the bk5's when they went cheap and both are roll stamped. as much as i would love to come across the etched version, i think this blade thrives with the smooth coating. its such a slicey blade that the rough coating would need to be sanded at a minimum to keep up.

Thanks for the reply's guys, it feels great and I'm pleased with my first Becker even tho I haven't been able to use it.

My favorite BK as well. The smooth coating is far and away the most prevalent and, IMO, much preferred for the type of knife that it is. The BK5 is my go-to food prep Becker along with its little cousin the BK15.

The main attraction for me with the 5 has always been that is a very large blade, with very little weight. I remember chopping up a xmas tree with one years ago, it's posted up somewhere...............

I just got mine out, and checked the edge angle. It showed a 20 on each side... I brought it down to an 18 per side, and polished it up on the leather strap with green paste.. For kitchen work I like 18 on large knives that serve double duty in hunt camp also. It slices paper better. It was sharp before..

Just got a BK-4 and a BK-5 last week, my Christmas presents to me. The 5 sliced and boned out an 8lb ham for dinner Friday, and quite nicely, I might add. I've been meaning to get a 5 for some time, it's a really handy knife. I have the Blackjack Magnum Camp Knife to compare it to, they're NOT the same knife, completely different. Which is better is going to be an interesting test, and will take some time to figure out. The Machax is probably going to be my go-to outdoor knife come Spring-time. The best part about getting them for myself? I got exactly what I wanted!
