In recent weeks, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the amazing work that all of you do in modifying Ethan's creations. Just when I think I've seen it all, someone presents something new and amazing.

That being said, I never really anticipated doing a mod myself. I like Uncle Ethan's creations so much as they are that I knew it would take something fairly significant to inspire me to modify one of them (beyond perhaps buying a new set of scales at some point). That inspiration came recently....

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I learned that we were expecting our first child. We were humbled and elated. Last week, we learned that we had lost the baby. We were humbled and devastated. However, we have been continually blessed by an outstanding support network through church and our work and have been continually reminded how great God is. We are still hurting, but in the short time since we learned the bad news, there have been several positives that have come out of it. So, even though we are hurting, we are truly blessed.

I started trying to think of what I could do as a tribute to our lost child. The inspiration came when my wife told me that people referred to a miscarried child as an "angel baby." I think it hit me when I was looking through one of the BK11 mods floating around right now and then got to thinking about the new BK14 I recently purchased. I went through a few different designs and here is my design:

The wing design and the world "Angelus" (Latin for "angel") will be engraved into the blade. I found a locally owned shop who said they could do it inexpensively. I'm planning to make two sets of custom wood scales (in the event I manage to get through this mod with the backup set intact, I'll give them away here on the forum). The last step will be a custom sheath.

So, while I'm waiting for the "canvas" to arrive, I'd like some feedback. The engraving shop can do either a laser engraving which will make the wing design and lettering black or a traditional engraving into the steel. Anyone have any feedback on one vs. the other?

I am truly sorry for your loss. My prayers out out to you & your wife.
I think your. 14 mod is a great way to honor your child.

My prayers are with you and your wife. I can't imagine the devastation u both felt. God always has purpose.

Anyway, your mod will be absolutely amazing! You couldn't have picked a better knife. I have nothing to suggest as I think it will be perfect.....just really want to see the finished product.

Thanks, SBK. I'm kind of inclined to go traditional engraving, I think, even though it will be a little more expensive. Can't imagine the black outline looking very good for this project.

Visited a local woodcraft supply shop yesterday; nice pieces of bocote and black palm. I'll probably use one of those for the scales.

Also, the "canvas" has been ordered and should be here around the middle of the week!

The BK14 for this project arrived today!

Can't believe how different (hopefully in a good way) it will look in a few weeks compared to its brother.

Next phase of the modification process completed tonight. Stripping the blade....

Here is the stripped blade:

Now a question for all of you experienced modders out there in Beckerland - after stripping and rinsing the knife, there was this spotty blue haze on the blade:

So, any thoughts? Just a reaction to the stripping agent that I used? I am planning to do a forced patina using grapefruit and white vinegar. Will that cover it or should I plan to try sanding that off before I do the patina? Thanks!

Sandpaper is your friend here. If you don't want it to look too polished maybe try steel wool first and knock off the top oxidation.

Either way, you can plan on using some elbow grease to clean 'er up.

Finally had a chance tonight to get some more work done on this mod. I did a little sanding going from 60 to 100 to 150 to 220. Not trying to polish the blade, just trying to buff out some of the oxidation that occurred when I stripped it. The next component will be the forced patina - maybe next weekend!

A. Sorry for your loss. The grief that comes can be huge for some, less for others, but significant for all. Glad you are finding some good support out there.

B. I'm fairly new to this whole quality knife thing - and especially the mod thing. What did you use to strip it?

A. Thanks, dude. It was a tough few weeks, but we're super blessed to have the people around us that we do. And planning/executing a project like this is therapeutic for me.

B. I used "Klean Strip Premium Stripper" - purchased it in the paint section of a "big box" hardware store. But, search for mods on the forum and you'll find a number of different products people use.
