finally got up into the woods with my becker yesterday morning. very rainy, windy, and very cold. but man did i have a good time! :D did some light batoning just to see what the 16 could do. attempted feather sticking, and failed at feather sticking. i think my hands were too cold for any light work. (forgot gloves in my garage) and as much as emasculating as it is, i gotta be honest with you guys. i even failed at fire starting. it was just too rainy and windy. did end up getting some good practice with my magnesium fire starter though. ill try to upload some pics, nothing special but hope ya like em anyway

You got out and had some fun. That's what counts. Next time : gloves , feather sticks first , bring at least two ways to start a fire.

Fire can be tough in the winter out this way. Don't beat yourself up. The point is you got out to do it and you'll get a little Each time. Now that having been said, you screwed big time by not getting pictures.

Getting out there is the important thing.
Fire with a firesteel takes some practice.
How did you like the BK16.
PICS.

When you are feathersticking, make sure to start the downward cut at the curve of the blade near the point, then move the blade down in a forward, sawing motion. Averageiowaguy made a video this week showing that trick, and it solved the problem I've been having with my shavings. I used my Fisked FPR16, btw, to make a hatful of nice, long curls with this method. Use a scandi-ground knife, and it works even better.
