My "Black Bag" (a gadgeteers delight)

Finally got around to taking a pic of my "Black Bag" (BB) and its contents.

Actually, its a Pelican 1470 attache, but the "Black Bag" moniker comes from the Cordura bag which camouflages the "importance"-factor of a Pelican attache.

Contents: Glock 26 & Ammo, Extra Mag, Cybertool 41, SureFire M6, SureFire 6Z, SureFire Spares Carrier (with l/a for 6Z & 3V's), Spare AA batteries, Cammenga Lensatic Compass, Garmin GPSIII, Microtech UT6, Yaesu VX-5R & Spare batteries (both Li and Alkaline).

The BB follows me on almost all my domestic business trips, always on camping and fishing trips, and almost always on my vacations.

Here's a pic:

One last pic of the 1470 camouflaged as an ordinary shoulder bag/computer case in the black cordura bag (hence the name "Black Bag").

Note, the "bulge" on the top of the black cordura bag is my Snugpack TP500 sleeping bag (good down to 45F)--which I recently took with me on a houseboating trip.

Sure, but would it impress Q? :D

Oh, I tend to travel quite a bit in any given year. I finally resorted to the Pelican-style case after arriving at many destinations with broken stuff--which had previously been perfectly functional at time of check-in.

Cool set-up Ron

I have similar set-up, but nowhere near as nice. Basically just stuff all my crap in a ballistic nylon bag. I also have the VX-5. Neat little radio. I bought the cheapo vinyl case for it...keeps the dust and scratches off.

When I stay in high rise hotels, I also take a EVAC-U8 smoke hood. Kinda on the extreme side  but smoke inhalation is the leading cause of death in fires. Just a little bigger than a can of soda.

That's exactly what I used to do. And I would stuff the soft bag in a hard-sided suitcase--thinking that would protect my stuff. Unfortunately, after enough travels, the human-wrecking machines known as baggage handlers proved me wrong.

So, I invested the $150 in the Pelican to protect my expensive toys...

Oh, BTW, the Pelican usually is place inside another hardsided suitcase.

That is awesome!

I have a similar set-up, but prefer to keep the contents in my briefcase. My briefcase goes with me everywhere (even when running errands on weekends) - it's like my security banket!!! Here are some items in my "black bag" that you may want to consider for yours:

duct tape
a multi-tool
pepper spray

IMO, the M6 seems like overkill..but hey, who am I to say?!? IF you're going to use it, you probably should carry two spares carriers! I opted for an M2 with a P61 lamp for "tactical" use, and an Inova X5 for general lighting.

Ron: All I can say is: WOW!

May I ask what prompted you to put together such a kit? Just general preparedness, or other reasons?

Also, do you declare the contents, or just check the bag when you travel? I take it you made the foam cut-out yourself?

An ENVIOUS Drjones :D

No particular reason, just the gear I found myself toting semi-regularly--but not "collectively" as they are arranged in the Pelican case. General preparedness is in my blood, so it'd be difficult to not cite that as a reason.

I don't play around with the Law. I have too much to lose, with a BATF FFL, CCW's in two States, a FCC HAM License, Calif. DoJ's COE, etc. I'm like one of the most "documented" persons around. The ammo is separated from the Pelican when checking in at the Airline ticket counter, the gun is declared, I sign the Orange (for UAL, or White for American) Firearms Declaration Card, etc.

The foam cutouts are easily customized. :)

Where would one find such an item? I think it is a very good idea to have one of these when travelling.

Re: Procuring Evac-U8 hoods. Try Brigade Quartermasters, Ranger Joe's, and Botach Tactical for starters.

Also many Industrial Supply warehouses will carry them. Good luck. :)

You can also try

www.exitsafe.com

It also has a capton hood for flash fires, and filters out a lot of toxic gases. Do a search for them...there is lots of good info.

I went the other way - I use a backpack for my edc:)

Here is my web page without the picture of the pack - it's all stuffed in a Becker Patrol Pack:D It fits in the suitcase fine

My "Go" bag

Ron- Nice set up! That is so cool!
Charles- Way to be prepared!
Matt---the unprepared one

I really want to get a couple of these, but the expense makes it difficult. I know it's worth it, but I still have trouble pulling the trigger on something I can't play with. The best I could do was a nomex hood, fogless rubber goggles (supposedly keeps out smoke) and a mask--the poor man's version of the hood.

I love this type of thread--I always see something new that I want that I'd never seen before.

Zeng-

What you have to ask yourself is: How much would you pay for an Evac-U8 hood should you actually be caught in a hotel fire? I'd guess the if you were looking down a smoke-filled hallway as your only escape, you'd go high 5-figures without blinking an eye...
