My Blade West: Attack of the Carbon Fiber!

My best buddy of nearly 20 years, Jonathan and I headed down to Blade West late this morning. After nearly two painful hours of worse than average LA traffic (this was a Saturday!) we arrived.

Once inside we were mostly overwhelmed by the diversity and sheer number of knives to look at and fondle. It was a sensory overload. There were knives for sale, collections on display, knifemaker supplies and pretty much everything that a knife minded individual might be interested in. The displays of minitures were absolutely fabulous.

I had my bladeforums shirt on and met a couple forumites. To be honest, I was so distracted my so many cool knives that I forgot the names of most of them. I do remember meeting poboy and I hope he gets the Razor Edge video I sent him last week soon from the pass around. He was well prepared with the infamous SIFU. A coule makers recognised the bladeforums shirt and seemed interested in the forums and admitted to lurking here ocasionally.

I went to the show possibly looking for a Crawford KFF or a large decorated Sebenza as my "If it really blows me away, i might spend the money knife". I was also looking for a deal on a Benchmade 941 LE with the carbon fiber handle and the D2 blade (have the red BC1 941 LE already)and perhaps a Microtech Vector black blade part serrated for a gift for my step son's 21st birthday.

I found boththe KFF I was looking for as well as a beautiful Large Decorated Sebenza. I liked a lot of Pat Crawford's knives (one in particular)although in person I found the KFF to be a little large for any sort of EDC in my pocket. I also found a Unique pattern S30V large Sebenza with a really cool Blue Agate stone set in the handle that I loved. Infortunately, I couldn't pull the trigger on either knife (lots of money to me).

Instead, for the same money as either the Crawford OR the Reeves knife would have cost, I got both the Benchmade BM941D2CF I was looking for AND an Alan Elishewitz Titanium scale with Carbon Fiber inlay, frame lock, with an ATS34 sort of clip point blade. The Elishewitz has blue titanium engine turned on the inside of the scale faces and a silky smooth action. Looking at his site, the general style seems to reflect his "Persian" outline, but this appears to be an older knife as it has a round thumb stud. It was supposed to be new, old stock from a dealer who I trust (Plaza Cutlery). It's my first real custom, (although not built to my specs)!

Both knives have Carbon Fiber!

My buddy (budding knife knut) got a Cammilus Cuda Cyber folder with printed circuit boards for scales (he's worked in electronics manufacturing for a long time). He also got a cool stainless damascus Japanese style chef's knife from the distributor of Seiki Cut across from the Chris Reeve table.

I'll try to post pics of my new blades tomorrow, but I've gotta sleep now. Too many knives and too much fun for one day.

Too much fun was had by all.

Sounds like you had fun :)
Did they have any custom sheath makers there?

Looking forward to seeing the photos of your new knives.

I picked up a BM 941cfd2 before the show at a B+M store and paid about $60 more than I would have paid had I waited. Oh well. It does seem like a very nice knife. The Crawford Kasper is nice but it is a very large no nonsense blade that carries well in pouch but not in the pocket. No custom sheath makers that I can recall seeing.

It's OK, you gotta support the B&M guys or we'll have no place to fondle new knives (outside shows which aren't always convienient). I paid about 25% more for my first 941 LE than my second because I bought it from a B&M retailer (but I still didn't pay retail).

So far, I've bought a 941 variant virtually every way you can buy a new one. First one came from B&M dealer (Red 941 LE BC1). Second one came from online retailer (943 black plain edge satin finish). Third one came from ebay dealer(second Red LE BC1) and yesterday the final one (darbon/D2) came from a show (Thanks to the guys at TAD)!

I'm sure Benchmade will stand behind all four knives and feel ok with each purchase (even if I paid more for the B&M purchase). B&M retailers have a higher overhead and generally a bigger investment in inventory than e-tailers, so to stay in business they have to charge more. I'm not saying that there aren't quality online dealers (like 1sks) but the B&M dealer by nature needs to charge a bit more.

My opinion,

Did your buddy check out Murray Carter's table? It isn't often that you see an ABS Master Smith from Japan who is a Canadian making awesome kitchen knives for ~$40 to ~$65.

I got a pair that are really awesome. Hard to believe what I paid for them too :D

I was surprised at the breadth of Murray's offerings. He has particurlarly caught my attention as he's located in Santa Monica which is less than a dozen miles from my office.

Murray was there and his knives looked good. My buddy was pre-disposed to less expensive Japanese knives as he's not a high dollar knife buyer yet. Murray's knives were amazingly reasonable for the money, but didn't quite catch his attention.

JMX, it was good to meet you and your buddy. And yes, the KFF with the "jeweled everything" was sweet. I assume this is the one you were talking about. I did get the video. I got all the three pass-arounds that I'm involved in right now confused, I got the video on Friday, but I was already in Vegas by then. I only carried the SIFU on Saturday, I had the '98 Commander in my pocket for Sunday. I had a couple makers say something about the shirt as well. I met quite a few people there. Mostly guys with companies. I met the TAD guys except for Josh. I met Trace Rinaldi, the TOPS guys, Derekand Shaun from Emerson Knives. I talked with quite a few of the makers as well, and all were nice and happy to chat. This was my first knife show, and I was impressed by the people and amazed at the craftsmanship that goes into these handmade knives. It was a great experience. :D
