My Blind Fury sword

Hi everybody. I’m fairly new to posting here but been lurking around here for years LOL. I recently finished a project I’d like to share and get some feedback on. It's a sword inspired by the movie “Blind Fury”. And although I do make my own blades I actually used a Huawei blade for this one. But even though I didn’t actually make the blade a lot of work went into the rest of it. I guess you could call it an extreme modification or customization lol. Anyway I have always loved the sword in the movie but could never find one even close to looking like it. I know that there are lots of Zatoichi swords out there but most are really nice and pretty looking whereas the one in the movie just looked like a plain ol’ stick. Not perfectly shaped it was kind of irregular and plain like someone had just cut a piece of straight tree and just rtughly made a walking stick out of it. Well that’s what I wanted. But to be honest I didn’t want it to be quite as rough looking as the movie. “If you catch some still footage in the movie you can see that it was pretty damn rough LOL I wanted mine to be as unnoticeable as possible to the fact that it was actually a sword. But I still wanted it to look like a plain ol, “hiking stick” So I purchased a Huawei Zatoichi and tore it down. I don’t know if any of you have ever seen the inside of one of these but to mu surprise the tang is not very long at all and the blade was not pinned. Its actually held in by the tang being shaped kind of zigzag around the wood inside the handle.. So before I set out to make my Blind Fury sword I actually welded a little more length to the tang. If you look closely at the pic of the handle you can see where I actually pinned the blade in and countersunk the pins and made some small wooden plugs to hide them. “That was some hard metal to get a hole through lol” But anyway here it is. I worked on it off and on for a long time and its finally finished. My plan is to just handle it as much as I can and maybe even use it hiking sxo it can get that natural “Worn used and slightly dirty look” Then I’ll lightly polyurethane it BUT use a FLAT poly so that way it will protect it but it won’t be shiny and won’t look like its finished. Ok so didn’t mean to babble on like that sorry. But anyway here it is. Tell me what ya think.

Thanks! Wow I always wanted the sword from steel dawn. Love that movie. Got any pics? I'd love to see it! Maybe I'll try to make one myself :-)

I'm not really into movie swords..... or sword movies....., but it looks like it will serve your purpose.

A couple tips for the future:

It looks like you used oak for the tsuka/saya. Oak can cause rust and corrosion on steel blades because of the chemicals in the wood. Clean and oil the blade often. Woods like alder and ash work better for projects like this.

You haven't filled out your profile, so we don't know where you live, but be aware that caring a sword cane is illegal in many places.

Wow I never knew that about oak. Good info! Thanks. Yeah I need to get around to filling out my profile stuff. But I live in southern VA. Thanks for the heads up about the laws but I always make sure to stay up to date on these type of laws. I've had a concealed weapons permit for over 20 years now. But aside from that because of my job I am exempt from many such laws in VA. No I'm not a police officer or anything like that. To be honest its really just a loophole buried in the laws that allow me to carry automatic knives and things of that nature. And believe me yes I know how lucky I am for that. Oh and btw i4Marc the guy that wrote the movie said it was actually inspired by Zatoichi :-)

Just like the Magnificent Seven western was a remake of the Seven Samurai.

I hear this a lot from military, police, firefighters, and volunteer rescue people. The law allows for use of certain banned items, specifically autos, when authorized. Authorization has to mbe in writing, carried by the user, and from his commanding officer. It is not inherently conveyed by just doing the listed job. It is unlikely that it would be an issue, but the law isn't as cut and dried as many think.

Correct you are my friend. You really have to watch your Ps & Qs when dealing with that sort of thing. Most of the laws "especially regarding autos" are ancient and really need to be revisited. Many states will allow you to carry autos etc as long as you have a conceal carry permit. VA however does not. Which makes absolutely no sense at all. Sooo let me get this straight lawmakers .... in my right pocket is a 9mm with hydroshock rounds and a tactical light with laser sight and that's fine. In the left pocket is a pocket knife that opens when you push the button and that's illegal. LOL REALLY PEOPLE? LMAO!

Yep, really dumb...isn't it.

The sword cane comes under the same rules. It is a banned weapon. No matter that it is unlikely to win in a gun fight...it is banned.
