Hello All,

I have a quick question. I edc a benchmade 960, and for some reason when i sharpen it I am unable to get the last Cm or so sharp. I use a lansky rig @ the 20 degree/side setting. I get the majority of the blade pretty sharp, but for some reason the tip has remained dull. I have tried the majic marker trick and it seems that i am indeed sharpning the edge and not behind it.

Any ideas. My inkling is that it has something to do with the way the knife is held in the gig and that the angle the stone contacts the rounded part of the blade. I have tried to adjust the fit but there really only is one way that the knife can be securred in the clamp evenly and properly.

Thanks for any Input.

The actual bevel angle changes as the distance between the blade-clamp and where the stone contacts the blade. As that distance increases, the angle becomes more acute. As the honing angle becomes more acute, more metal must be removed to meet the edge.

To maintain an approximately constant honing angle with the Lansky System, even with a folder blade, requires two blade-clamp positions per edge - one for the straight portion of the edge and another for the forward curved portion of the edge - for each side of the blade.

In other words, the Lansky System sucks. I stopped using mine about 20 years ago.

Look a bit closer, and I'll bet you'll find that the bevels DO NOT meet the edge at the tip - and the bevel angle will be closer to 15 degrees than 20 degrees.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I think you hit the nail on the head. I am planning to order a sharpmaker soon here, but i bought a new knife in the meantime so that got sidetracked.

Thanks again for the feedback
