I have been having problem with my 735.

First right after I got it the blade was kind of flaking away. which suggested to me BM had just over sharpened it. I tried to resharpen fix it myself w/ the sharpmaker but the tip had also been broken and I couldn't get it right so I sent it to BM with a note discribing the problem and my consern that it was over sharpened or maybe The metal was cooked wrong. They fixed the blade no charge and sent it back. I've been useing the blade for maybe 3 weeks since I got it back and the blade has held up but the tip broke off. I swear I didn't pry with it and I can't think of anything very hard that I would have stabbed into(cardboard maybe).

So I call apon the vast knowledge that is blade forums! Is 154cm just not strong enough? I've used 440c as an EDC and it never did anything like this it just only stayed sharp for three seconds. Is my 735 flawed?

Thanks for your help.

I'm sending the knife in and Angie said they would replace the blade this time, but I still want to know why this is happening.

Knife, that is very strange, I've had some customs with bad heat treat that the edge crumbled off or flaked off, I'm sure Angie will take care of you in a Stellar way! They like to keep people happy there!

Good luck on the replacement, third time's a charm?

Please explain what you mean by "flaking away"? Are you trying to use your knife to cut concrete? What do you use your knife for?

What happened that caused the tip to break off?

It could be a bad heat treatment, but when it's 2 knives in a row...

How are you sharpening it? A sharpmaker only? What kind of knife did you carry before in 440C?

440C is fairly well respected as a decent steel. I believe 154CM should be superior in edge holding, but not THAT superior.

Sounds like a bad problem. I'm sure benchmade will take care of you.

Good luck!

No No it only happened on the one 735. I don't cu tanything crazy (like concrete) I use a sharpmarker as I mentioned. as far as the flaking I mean that whole pieces of the blade would come off durring normal use it happened in three places the first time. it was like I had been hacking at something and it took big chips out of the blade. They were bad enough that I couldn't get them sharpened out.

one of my bm's is peeling at the very tip, i can't tell if it is the bc1 peeling off or if it is flaking as you describe.
