My boss asked me to sharpen his cheap knife

My boss knows that I'm a knife guy. He has asked me before what's the difference in my knives that I carry vs his cheap knife. He doesn't regularly carry a knife but mentions that he has a knife that was given to him at some point probably purchased at Wal-Mart.

So today he walks into my office and hands me the knife. It's a Spyderco Delica in ATS-55. I immediately tell him this isn't a "cheap" knife by any means. He was thinking it cost $10 at Wal-Mart and was surprised to see what the Delica is selling for today. You could tell he had a sense of pride about owning the knife now but because he isn't a knife guy he had never heard of Spyderco and just assumed it was a Wal-Mart special.

I'm going to sharpen and clean it up for him (more pics to come) but I thought you guys may get a kick out of it. Also, what generation is this one?

This is awesome. The ATS-55 Delica is one of the best knives I ever owned. I had a blue PE and a black SE. Both were awesome. Cool knife.

Cool, and glad he didn't do something stupid to it like use it as a screwdriver! Nice see even those who aren't "one of us" do appreciate nice tools.

I sharpen my bosses (shop owner) knives. He brings some small assisted opening kershaw and a few kitchen knives on a regular basis. He ogles my knives all the time but thinks I'm insane (and over paid lol) for what they cost. But I then remind him that his racecar pays for most of them. I design and machine what he can't go out and buy.

We all have our priorities in life.....

I have a guy works for me who carries a delica 4 in VG-10. I watched him "worry" it through a piece of twine the other day and I just couldn't stand it. It had been hashed for years and was somewhere on par with "buttre knife sharp." I took it home for him and did a 100% resharpening job on it. Took me an hour on the coarse diamonds to work all the chips out and then work through to the ultra fine rods.

He was at a loss for words when I gave it back to him. He said he'd never seen a knife that sharp. I said, "Yeah you have, you just don't remember when it used to be that way."

One of those in PE was my only knife for quite a long time. When I finally gave it to a coworker, the FRN pattern near the pivot was actually starting to wear smooth. Boy do I miss that pointy point.

I used to avoid serrated edges like the plague back then, but I've gotta admit, the combo edge actually works rather well on a Delica.

Not a Spyderco user myself, but I have to admit he has a nice knife for not knowing what he had. Maybe this will make him a knife guy, now.

Cool story, haha.

Just goes to show you lots of people out there have possessions they have no idea about!

What a great story. Now you need to get him to buy a Sharpmaker, show him how to use it, and he will keep his own knife sharp.
