Decided my almost 5 year old son was ready to move onto a dull steel knife finally (used rubber, then wood, now steel). I used an old throwing knife I had and flattened the edge to make sure it was very dull and polished it so it was less dangerous than a butter knife lol. We focused on safety, edge awareness, skill building, etc.

First we did some simple bark stripping and wood shaving:

We did a little battoning:

Fun times had by all. It's great passing along knowledge to my son....and playing with my BK2 lol.

That's great, it's good to see that you are teaching him the right way to do things, like cutting away from his body. Thanks for sharing.

Wow man, very cool!
It's nice to see a father spending time with his son and imparting knowledge and skill.
We need more dads like you in this world.
Your boy looks so happy in those pics. Awesome!

You sir should be a very proud papa. That is awesome. Looks like he is being careful too which is also very awesome. Do you already have a blade for him ready he is ready to move on to sharp ones?

Thank you very much for all the kind words everyone.

Nathan,
He is very interested and pays very close attention. Cutting away from his body, edge awareness, squaring up so he won't miss and cut a leg, etc. He's a good pupil.

Jonny,
Thank you sir. I love spending time with my kids and the fact that my boy loves house projects and outside skills makes me very happy. I'm always so proud when someone asks him how he knows how to do something and he says "my dad taught me". Awesome feeling.

Chameleon,
Well I already have a cheapo nylon sheath for this knife (made by me...it's crappy but functional) and I'm going to let him carry it dull for a while to get used to the presence of the blade outside. I told him when I feel he's ready and if he keeps doing well, I'll sharpen this one a bit. I'll make it only a little sharp, then if he does well with it still then he can get a BK11. :)

Thanks again everyone for the kind words. I was just so happy that my boy likes doing these things that I had to take some pics and share.

Cool for teaching your son about blades. I don't know what you're wife thinks about it but you got to admit, he's one happy little dude in these pics lol.

Great pics!! Glad to see you teaching your son valuable knowledge that he will have and use the rest of his life. I can't wait until my boys are a little older so I can do the same.

I love everything about this post! Except the Eagles jersey. :thumbdn:

It's always good to see a dad spending time with his boy and even better when they're doin' something cool like that. The smile on your boy's face really takes me back a few years to when I was teaching my son to fish. Great memories!

Thanks for sharing,
Rich.

Awesomesauce!!!!!

Love getting the kids in the mix, with some knives and knowledge.

Charlie,
Yes darn it! HAHAHAHA. It's a practice blade man, give me some slack.

Beavis,
She was all for it once I explained that I was dulling and blunting the blade. If I just gave him a sharp one she'd probably stick it in my back....with love of course.

Gizler,
I started him at 3 years old with a rubber knife. We moved to wood at 4 years old and now that he's 5 next week I decided it was time for him to move onto dull steel.

rkmoore,
HA at the Eagles! They are torturing me these past 2 seasons. It is an exercise in self-loathing.

Murph,
Thank you sir!

Moosez,
Thanks brother.

Kai,
Thank you very much.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a father spending time with his son outdoors.

I promise you that these are memories that he will remember for the rest of his life, and skills he might pass on to his son one day.
