got here on Thursday and I've been really busy, so I finally got around to opening it this morning.

WOW! It is much sweeter than I thought it would be.

I'd watched MANY youtube videos, and don't remember anyone saying anything bad about it. I loved everything that I had heard on it. And, I wanted a larger knife, with a different type of steel blade.

The only thing that concerned me was the 5.5 ounces. But, after removing the clip (I let knives ride in the bottom) my scales read 5.02 ounces. If I could remove 1 more ounce from this thing, it may just be the perfect EDC knife for a fella like me.

So, my question is this, have any of you ever taken a skeletonized liner a little bit further? I don't know if another ounce off of it is possible without hurting it or not, but it looks like some could be removed according to pictures that I've seen posted of the liners?

Any thoughts? I will share more thoughts later, after my thumb is a little more raw.......lol

P.S..............It feels wonderful in the hand with the clip removed, if you've never tried it.

No recommendations on how to do it, but I'm sure you could lighten it... I would be wary of trimming too much out of the liners though. Is it an FRN or G-10 handle? If it's G-10 with full liners, then you might be able to do it. If it's FRN, then I'd avoid taking any more off the liners... The skeletonized FRN liners I've seen are already pretty well trimmed down.

Could you trim some material out of the scales or backspacer, rather than the liners? If you took your time and set up a router at the proper depth, you could probably trim away a few mm in each of the handles and lighten it a bit.

Oh, and where are the pictures? :D

EDIT: Or, just buy this little beast instead... Only 1.3 oz. :D

It's a CF laminate on top of G10 scales. If there's material to remove and you're not going to work it hard you might be able to lighten it a little bit without compromising it's integrity. It is a beefy knife to start with...I "Test Carried" one for a couple of weeks and I thought the weight was spot on for that size/type of knife. You could always get something a tad lighter to carry at times when a knife that beefy isn't necessary...like a Domino for example. If you like your knives clipless the Air would make a great choice (The lack of clip is what's stopping me from buying one).

1 ounce.... really? Just take a bigger poop in the morning or don't keep change in your pocket. That'll save you an ounce.

Weight is not a problem for me. I like the balance of a knife with a heavier handle. A couple of my all time favorites prior to the GB folder were the Buck 110 and Al Mar SERE 2000--both had heavy handles that just felt gooood. IMO, the Gayle Bradley is pretty close to the perfect knife as is. At least until something better comes along.

Jonny,

I thought about that, and called Spyderco customer service a couple of weeks ago, and they didn't know of it yet........go figure.

Jastab,

Yep, REALLY, just one ounce less. It's not about my weight, it's about what the knife weighs. If I lost 50 lbs, the knife would still seem a bit heavy in my pocket..........do the math.

Pope,

I ordered the Air a couple of weeks ago, and while it is a masterpiece in design and build, it is worlds apart when you're talking about a larger knife...........different worlds.

Chris,

Thank you for that link, I never thought of just drilling the holes part of the way through the liners. That keeps the inside looking good also.

Thank you to all that have replied.

It won't be until I get a little use on it, but I'm sure that I will whittle on it a little bit. We all have our own ideas of what a perfect knife should be.....lol

You can enlarge some of the holes, but you risk altering the rigidity/integrity of the knife itself. I know some folks subscribe to the "4 ounce rule" but not me, and not on this particular knife. It would be making it into something it was not really designed to be (from the designers own perspective). It did go some significant lightening from the very first generation. I also have the original version, and it works well as is. I can see the knife being heavy for someone that works in an office and wears khaki pants and such, but it's good as is for the rest of us. :)

Good to hear Chris, I've never liked the slanted khaki pockets for carrying knives, I seem to lose all my stuff every time I sit down.

I think I will wait to get the GB 2 when it's released

+1 to this! its still in early stages but from what I understand they have improved upon the original greatly, and a little birdie told me that the liners on the GB 2 were titanium this go round :) . I also remember reading it has a shorter handle which is great!

The more I use and mess around with this blade, the more I think I'll hold up on trying to lighten it, at least until I get to see what the GB2 feels like. Maybe, just maybe, I'll have both?

It does feel great in the hand.

Rev, enlarging the original holes may be faster and easier for cutting weight off of it than drilling more, smaller holes. Thanks for that thought. Maybe later.

If they're talking titanium liners, you won't be picking up the GB2 for 150.00 though.

Also, I have seen photos of deep carry clips on the Bradley folder, but can't find them right now. Some were wire clips and some were similar to what comes on the knife itself.

What options do I have for a deep carry pocket clip? I was wanting to not use a clip, but now I think I may try a deep one.

I can't seem to locate aftermarket clips at the moment.......thank you.

Seems like you're asking for some Bradley photos to me... :D

This one is made by theoriginalspaceman here on the forum.

This one is an STR clip. I'm not sure of the contact info since I bought it second hand on the exchange here.

The cocobolo scales were made by SPKetch here on the forum.

I did some comparison pictures here and the consensus was that the originalspaceman long clip fits the profile of the Bradley a bit better. I agree.
