My brand new Emerson makes a squeeling sound

I just recieved a new Emerson yesterday and I opened and closed it (with grit in) about 300 times and then dissamebled cleaned and lubed. Now it is buttery smooth. But one problem!............

It makes a terrible squeeling sound while being opened and closed. At first I figured I thought it will go away with a about a hundred opening and closeings. But it hasn't! I even sprayed extra oil in there and still SREEEETCH~!
It is coming from the small ball on the lockbar. Maybe it is froze or damaged? I don't really know if these are supposed to roll inside or are fixed?

Now my question is has anyone else had this happen before?

Does the ball have to actually roll? Is it stuck and that is what causes the noise?

It seems the lockbar is acting as a fine tuning fork which makes the noise and the ball is vibrating it..whoo Hoo.:barbershop_quartet_
And oil will not fix it.

Anyway, anyone can help or make suggestions before I call Emerson customer care again?

Me: Hello customer care. My new Emerson is buttery smooth and open and closes like a charm.. the only thing is it makes a sound.

Customer care: Okay get ear plugs.

Me: Gee thanks for solving that for me again!

Okay I called customer service and I figured out what it was.

The actual lockbar developed a burr which stuck out in the direction away from the bar toward the blade (like the ball does) and that touched the side of the blade that made that horrible screeching sound.

So all I did was file that down and reassemble and the noise was gone.

I guess opening and closing a sticky lockbar can cause a bur to develop away from the lockbar and cause the lockbar to become a tuning fork from that small bit of metal sticking towards the blade and rubbing on it.

Anyway I hope my escapades can help someone else solve a problem before having to send their knife into customer care.

Sounds like you have EKI customer service on speed dial! :p
I'm glad you got the problem fixed. I hadn't heard of that issue before, but now I'll know what to do if this happens.

Actually I just ordered about 5 new Emersons and they are coming all at once with problems. Usually I don't have any issues with them.

But I am glad to learn to fix any future problems and learn about them.

Thanks for posting this.
My GJ has always been a bit squeaky but I just ignore it. Maybe now I will fix it.

If it squeals like a pig, you should watch the movie Deliverance and DON'T do what the hillbillies do. :)

Was going to ask if there were people around screaming as you waved it open? :)

Okay, Okay, next time I will rethink the way I describe a knife.
