So get this shit. My best friend Sgt. Joel Abney just recently got out of the Army. While he was there, he busted his ass, did everything they could want out of a soldier, and went far beyond what they asked of him. He went through all the SF stuff and did his time and his duty. He never slacked. He always set an example of what a great soldier should be. He just got out a couple of months ago. Got a great job at a medical center, started school for computer engineering, got a great place to live with his girl. Everything is playing out great for him. Now worries, life is grand. Then, about a week ago, he gets his papers. He's being deployed to Iraq. Now that he has his after-war life started and everything is going great, they yank him right back in and ship him off. What the fuck? He told them that he was told that once he started college that they wouldn't call him back. The guy told him to get all these forms filled out, get letters from all these different people and fax them over. He got everything together and sent it to them. He called to make sure that they got everything and asked the guy what the chances are that he won't end up having to go. The guy said, go ahead and pack, you're going. He has to report to Fort Benning, then they're sending him to Texas to hook up with a unit and then they're leaving for Iraq. He called me last night and told me the whole thing. He said that he's going to get them to schedule his flight early so he can come stay with me for a little while before he has to report to Benning.

It just sucks that everything was going his way. I mean he got into a good school, has his girl (who was very excited about them starting a good life together when he got out), got a great job, and now the Army just blew the whole thing to pieces. It's not like he didn't go full force for them before or got out early or anything. The man did what was asked of him. He did his duty and was done. His time was up. Now he's going back to the sand box. That is some shitty shit.

When he leaves for Benning, he'll be taking my RC-4 and an Izula with him... and a badass hangover.

As a former Army SGT myself, I can understand the situation.

I'm guessing he was in his +2 years, meaning in IRR. They've been recalling those folks since 2003. Any enlistment is always an 8 year commitment.

I guess on the upside is his job is protected, the school will be there when he gets back and he doesn't have a wife and kids he's leaving behind.

I'm glad my military days where pretty much over by the time I started having kids.... my cousin just left his 3yo daughter two weeks before her birthday and another buddy has basically raising his two young son over the Internet, having been in Afghanistan or Iraq for most of their young lives.

I thank God for men like these.... true patriots serving their country when others don't.

and he doesn't have a wife and kids he's leaving behind.

It would be nice, but unfortunately, that's not the case. He does have a very young duaghter now, and he and his fiance were supposed to get married this Fall.

He really made a lot of progress in a short period of time with this whole "starting a new life" thing.

I know what he is going through. I'm still trying to get my after Army life going. LOL! I wish him the best of luck. Maybe they'll recend his orders before the departure. It's happened before.

That sucks.

They dicked over a guy at my work.
He was set to retire after 22 years, including THREE deployments to Iraq.

Hks papers were all in, and they sent him orders to Afghanistan and told him tough shit, his retirement would be delayed until he got back.

I realize they own you when you're in, but isn't 3 f-ing tours enough?

What really sucks is they wouldn't let me join again when I tried in 2003 because my eyes are no longer correctable to 20/20 (left eye can only go to 20/30 and right eye to 20/25). And that's prior service.

Could have sent my ass over there and that would have been one more guy that could stay home that year.

Man, that sucks - I've got a couple friends who were called back and really not expecting it, and it's a tough life. One is coming home very soon, and will finally get to meet his son for the first time.

Hey Dylan,

Sorry to hear about your buddies Army issues. Happens afar to often.

Send him my reguards, and thanks for his service, and i pray for his safe return.

I hear you, at 41 with four kids, I've lost 60 pounds and still have another 30 or so to go to make weight, event though I can pass the APFT.

I'd love to serve again in the Guard or Reserve to help in any way. I'll keep jogging and see how it goes...

I feel for him and the family, but understand we're fight two wars as well.

Again, a big salute for his service.

Dylan, I can emphize with your friend's prediciment. I say this. I salute his honor, duty, and devotion to God and Country. He could very well use some excuse like a phyiscal ailment or suddenly become a conciencious objector to dodge a IRR deployment but it sounds like he is facing the music head on like a man.
Lots of men and women have sacrificed much in the name of our politicians who never serve by design, and certainly not by choice.

That really sucks in a way that can't be described. Sounds like he was doing really well too, better off than some degenerates I've seen that don't do shit. I wish him a safe return.

Damn man, that sucks! Best of luck to him and his future wife! :(

Sorry to hear about all of this. I remember when I wanted to try and attend West Point. A friend of the family, a veteran of Vietnam, told me the repercussions of signing my name on the dotted line. I decided to attend college and see how life would pan out.

I truly appreciate your friend's service and feel sorry for him. Tell him to keep his head up and eyes sharp. We all will pray for his safe return.

Damn that sucks.

Several of my friends have spent over 3 years out of the last 8 or so overseas...and they are in the goddamned NATIONAL GUARD.

None of them have complained and all have gladly accepted their signed duty, but I can tell that they are all ready to kind of move on with their lives too.

I can't anymore, my hips are screwed and can barely move my right trigger finger. Otherwise I'd be the one jumpin up and down waving his hand to volunteer for deployment. Ah well, life bites us all in the ass. Ya never know, he might have a good time... men have been torn away from their families for millenia, there's nothing new under the sun. Might as well make the most of it.

my last stats showed 200000 called back in.glad my boy is in air force.i spent 4 yrs. in marines but had no recall.told my son that in air force he would'nt have to eat out of can or go wks. w / o bath even sleep in bed instead of ground,he,s glad he listened to me on that one.

Hey that sucks bro. but when you sign up for the Army you sign up for 8 years not the 4 everyone thinks. You do 4 years active then you do 4 more as IRR Indivadual Ready Reserve that means that once you knock out your first 4 years the Army still can call you up for 4 more years an d since we are in a time of war alot of people have gotten fucked over like that. Plus this whole stoploss being over is bull shit my Sgt just got stoplossed and he is suppose to be getting out in like a month but now he is deploying with us on the 23rd. The first thing you learn in the army is what U.S. ARMY stands for.... Uncle Sam Aint Released My Ass Yet. Tell you bro to hang in there and drive on and enjoy all that tax free money

DAMN! I'll add my prayers to those asking God to watch over and protect our soldiers. He's a HERO in my book!
