....not really.
Went diving today. I shot a rather large Amberjack which I thought I had hit with a kill shot to the head. Once I had him strung (on a stainless steel stringer that looks like a huge safety pin) through the eyes and the spear safely removed, the fish came alive.
He thrashed from side to side and actually was strong enough to swim, with me holding on for dear life to this stringer, into the depths. His tail kept smashing into my side as he swam, and when I pulled back he swam in circles with such force that he nearly dislocated my arm!
I knew I had to somehow subdue him so I took out my dive knife (a Busse Basic 7) and started to stab him around the head and spinal cord (lateral line) area. It did not stop him one bit. In fact, it just served to put even more blood into the water which coincidentally brought to the scene a 7ft shark. FUBAR would accurately describe this scene. On top of everything else I was 150ft deep and running out of air!!
My dive buddy finally came over and took my spear gun from me. I continued to slash and stab the AJ until he finally stopped thrashing and swimming. Together we slowly went to the surface, back to back, watching as the shark eyed us ominously.
Well, finally got the fish to the surface. The picture does not do him justice, he was over 55 lbs of muscle and just would not give up. As for the Basic 7, she finished the job when we got to the dock as I used her to clean and filet this monster.
