That is a very very nice x-mas gift. what is - Handle: Black Pearl Stone? i dont think i have evre heard of that, is it a natural type of stone or some kind of composite? Again Very nice knife.
:)

Terry-

It is a natural stone, a type of soap stone. Kinda soft so you can work it with regular tools, but takes a nice finish. My buddy is not going to be using this knife, I could not talk him into it, so I decided to put the stone on it.

I don't think the stone would be good for a user because it scratches pretty easy when you have a polished finish. But for a show piece, it is my favorite material so far. Just waiting for the Amboyna Burl to come in.:)

Just wanted to let you all know that I fixed that little "nick" in the handle that you can see in the last picture just to the left of the pommel.

Amazingly, I did not notice it until I looked at this post:) You would think I would have seen it earlier for as much as i have been staring at this guy. I also fixed a couple of small scratches that were on the gaurd (blade side). I think it is time that I invest in a better light in my shop:D

Anyway, thanks for your input.

I had the pleasure of watching this blade come alive, via the net and the PT chat room. Sean you really have the eye and I hope you will continue with your journey. Your craftmanship denotes being a more experienced maker, than you actually are.

That's a very nice looking knife, from start to finish. Your cable looks great, did you order it or recycle? Curious 'cause I've been eyeing cable in the machinery catalogs.

Is this your mokume? Seems I remember you saying you were thinking about giving it a shot. If so, you didn't miss a lick.

I like your handle too. Its color does the etch on the blade justice and I bet it adds nice heft to the whole package.

But really, your blade is truly fine. That's what caught my eye more than anything, and the more I look at it the better I like it. Keep up the good work, you'll be making big waves in no time.

Thanks for sharing,

Dave

Dave-

The cable was new. I got it from a supply house here locally. The guys there did not believe I could make a knife out of it. :) I am going to stop by there tomorrow and show them the knife. I got a 10 foot section that was a "drop" off of one of there spools. Got it for a buck a foot. Gotta love that!:D

The mokume is mine. It is my second billet, tried to do a ladder pattern in it and it turned out ok. The pattern looks good except on the blade side of the gaurd. well, that still looks good, but not as nice as where it was ground down. Oh well, i will remember that for next time.

I would suggest calling around to your local industrial supply stores to find the cable. Chances are the places you call wont have it but ask them were you should call. I made about 5 phone calls before I hooked up with the place where I got mine.

I got my extra improved 1.125 diameter cable from a rigging company that is local to me, i was also told that elevator companies, or places that have cranes usually have some also.

Really nice work, you're coming along fast :)

That's one heck of a present for a friend!

Just a suggestion...you spent all that hard work forging the cable, you will get a much clearer pattern etch if you hand sand the blade to at least 600...even better at 2000.

You'll be surprised at how much more a pattern will "pop" without any scratches to destract it :)

Good work!
Nick
