My caly 3.5 bums me out

My caly 3.5's blade tip touches the liners when i use my thumb to swing it open from the spydehole (im not pushing hard). In fact the whole blade seems loose and wobbly until it locks out. Is that something common with the design? I have read my say the knife is one of the finer examples of SC.....but mine is nothing compared to my others. The front of the choil is also terribly finished...clearly wasnt ground correctly if at all. Will SC help? I have gone as far as to want to ditch this knife and buy a ZDP delica and put CF scales on it.

Don't have a 3.5, but my 3 is perfectly centered and very well finished. The blade barely moves sideways with thumb pressure to open. It's very smooth while opening and locks solid, a very good specimen.
I can see your problem with the combination of a very small surrounding pivot surface, 3.5" blade, and if everything isn't flat and square.
The front of the choil terribly finished might indicate something else not ground properly.
Doesn't sound typical to me, and if tightening the pivot doesn't result in the way I describe mine, something might be amiss.

I'd send it in. My caly 3.5 is probably one of the nicest and best f&f knives I own.

I bought one from amazon and the handle area around the pivot were slightly warped allowing the same thing you described. Sal offered repair services but I just returned it to amazon.

Im probably going to send it in and see if it can be cleaned up. Too nice of a knife to not be 100% satisifed with.

I had the same issue with a Caly 3.5 ZDP 189. A relative from out of state borrowed one while visiting for awhile. When it was returned, it had the same "wobble" you describe. When closed, the tip could touch the liners in both directions with a little lateral pressure, yet locked up 100% solid when open.

I "pinched" the scales together at the pivot, and tightened the pivot about 1/4 turn or so. Problem solved.
No wobble, and smooth and easy open-and-close.

good luck to you

I sent my caly 3.5 in and got it back today with a letter. The knife is perfect and nothing wrong with it. Functions as designed. There is little spring pressure when closed, so the blade has a little play while closed. Its just a function of its design.
