My CF Delica has a Manufacturing defect.

I bought this knife April 03 from NGK. Since then it has mostly been sitting in a box in my safe. A couple of weeks ago I took off the clip and started using it as my small daily carry knife. A great knife! Of course when you carry a knife there is a tendency to constantly open and close it. Doing this smooths the knife's action and actually breaks it in.

Well, just last night I decided to strop the edge a little while watching the "tube". When I looked at the edge, the last .25 inch at the tip of the knife is dinged, smacked, rolled, and dull. I have not cut anything other than things much softer than steel. As I inspected the knife more closely it became obvious what is happening. When the blade closes it is smacking into the inside of the metal back spacer. There are corresponding marks on the backspacer to verify that this is happening. Also if you listen to the click of the blade closing the last thing you hear is the striking of the tip.

This really bumms me out because I know it will have to be sent back to Spyderco. You know how it is when you get attached to a certian knife. I am curious though since it is a defect, am I expected to pay for shipping it back? I know it's probably only 5 bucks but it's the principal. I'll check back here this afternoon before I ship it out to see how this is usually handled. Thanks.

Mr. Glesser has mentioned a person, who works in their warranty/repair division, by the name of Mike. You may want to try to contact him about the warranty process.

I don't know his specific e-mail address, but you could start by contacting custsvc@spyderco.com

This will at least give you a few more days with your Delica CF before shipping it off...

Warranty and Repair is "not available". I left a message between 1-2pm EST. Let's see how long it takes to hear a response if such a thing is possible on a Friday afternoon. I have also called back several times to recieve the same "not available" message.

Mike just called me back before 5pm EST. That is good response time. I will have to pay shipping to Spyderco. Somehow I "agreed" to this when I purchased the knife. I'd understand this policy better if it weren't a manufacturing defect.

The knife is "bottoming out" according to him. It will more than likely be replaced rather than repaired. So I will box it up and ship it out first thing in the morning. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens from here out.

I've encountered this problem on both a Buck Duke and a semi-custom quality Laguiole. Bummer. I'm waiting for my Delica CF to arrive from across the "pond" and sure hope it doesn't have the same problem. Transcontinental shipping back and forth is a real pain.

Good luck on your knife, I'll just hope they don't ship out your "bad" CF again - to me!  :D

Jon, it's pretty much standard proceedure to return the item to your dealer or to the manufacturer for warranty service be it a knife, my car, the tv, etc.
I'm nit picky so I often send return postage.I dont want to wear out my welcome.

The knife is #234 of a first production run which makes it somewhat unique. It will plrobably be replaced with a standard ole' non-numbered one.

Well often the tight tolerances the materials that they make the knife are just enough to cause a bottom out. My blue salsa was bottoming out on the ring in between the scales that holds the barrel screw in place, and I got a replacement from Mike, which didn't do so. Both rings looks quite identical in size, but one dulled and the other didn't.
Mike is going to take good care of your knife, so don't worry about that.

Just an update. My Delica was recieved at Spyderco on January 12th and I haven't heard anything yet. Through today it has been with them for 13 business days. For those interested in warranty turn around keep your eye on this thread. I will update as soon as anything new happens.

I got my Delica back today (Feb 12). That was only one month. After reading in this forum about the average warranty turn around I was expecting to be waiting at least 3 months. I am quite pleased with both the work done and the fairly fast turn around time getting my knife back to me. Thanks Spyderco.

Now, where are those Spyderflys...?

Hey I want into the club! I hope she doesn't mind us talking about her. Personally I think her idea of taking photographs through the spyder hole are the most original and unique "use" of spydercos i've seen yet. Let us all hope she keeps up the good work.
