Well been on a bit of buying streak as of late. You know sell some and buy some. Anyways my edc I have made my Caledonian. Just a very well built and executed knife. On the pricey side even when buying off of ebay but well worth what I paid.
Now that being said I have also picked up several cheapies. Knives less than 70 bucks. Matter of fact I sold a RAT1 folder a while back and decided that I needed another so bought 2. One black and one satin, both plain edged. A finer folder for the price point I have yet to find anywhere. These are just very well executed and attention to detail is almost perfect. I have also picked up a Black Hawk Be Wharned. That too is pretty decent for the type of knife it is. I think the ergo's could be a bit better as in maybe a longer handle so it fits in the hand a bit better. Definitely needs something on top of the blade, jimping, serrations whatever you want to call them. It has ridges on the g10 scales but they aren't very aggressive so your thumb has a bit of time sticking to them. Also the handle is pretty short and pulling my thumb back onto them cramps my thumb a bit so definitely needs serrations on top of the spine. I would like to see them right through the dip to the top of the clip. Would imho make it a very reliable knife then in the sense of applying pressure down with my thumb. I like the idea of the Wharnie enough to maybe investigate having this done on my own by some one.
Next I bought a couple of NAVY Chinese made knives that are compression locks. Hate to say it but the knives are superbly made. Lock up is stellar, full flat grind blades as are the other two mentioned and outside of the pocket clip which I don't like on the larger of the two I can't find a bad thing to say about them. Look similar to Spyderco knives which I don't go for either but that is the Chinese for ya. Supposedly made by the same factory that makes there Byrd line. They are tough knives, extremely well made, tight lock up and razor sharp.
Next up is a CS Ti Lite. Bought this about 6 wks ago and currently have it for sale here. Not because I don't like it. Just because I don't really carry it. Shame too, cause again this thing is uber cool, probably the sharpest knife I currently own including my Caledonian and the lock up again in a word is superb. Did a simple mod to it my putting shrink tubing over the quillians and the thumb stud and that takes care of any opening issues with the knife as for my thumb slipping off the stud and the quillians being sharp against my finger.
Next up is a pimped Kershaw Lahar. VG10 steel and for the price and build quality of the knife it is pretty darn good. I still think the RAT1 folders are a better price point but this isn't to far behind. I have 2 of these knives a stock knife and the pimped version. Toxic handles, bead blasted liners, screws and clip, and the flipper was professionally removed which I truly appreciate. A mid sized edc that cuts bigger than it is. I ain't a big Kershaw fan by any means maybe just cause there stuff seems so exotic to me. May not be to you but some of the blade shapes I just don't get. Be that as it is, this Lahar is a truly simple but to me a kind of classic design in a folder. Big wide blade, slight recurve, reinforced clip point and pretty good handle ergo's. Now if they would only come out with a 4.5" model or so, loose the flipper, a bit thicker liner for the size and make the handle appropriately sized and I might have new carry knife and dump the Cali. The Lahar is a very fine example of a good edc/s.d. knife if you ask me. Can do either and be either.
Next up is a BOKER M type designed by Chad LosBanos. Again a very well made frame lock folder that cuts way bigger than it is. Attention to detail and all around build quality is excellant. Lock is still sticky after owning this for several months. I think I paid less than 40 bucks delivered for it and ranks up there with the RAT's. I don't know maybe better. Carries nice and flat and I have yet to scartch the coating on the blade. Put some marks on it but no scratches so the stuff is tough and it looks cool. Silver gray instead of black, nice change of pace there. Opens very smooth, fills the hand nicely, no sharp edges and the frame lock just gives a bit more measure of confidence.
I have a couple of others too, the Black Hawk Crucible folder which is pretty nice, just kind of pain for me to close due to the liner lock being cut flush. Razor sharp and lock up is excellant. Good handle ergo's and as close to the original I had as one could get. No difference save for s.s. liners and AUS8a steel used.
Well thats' it. I am done writing. keepem sharp and thanks for listening.
