My Classic SOG Government and custom tooled sheath

I recently snagged a Used SOG Government and wanted to share some pictures.

The knife came with no sheath, had seen lots of use and needed a little TLC. The edge developed a slight recurve do to extensive use and sharpening. Also, the edge was butter knife dull. The rear guard was also dinged up a bit. I put a convex edge on the blade, took out most of the dings and cleaned up the rear guard. Then I built a custom tooled leather sheath for the knife.

The sheath is made from 8-9oz tooling leather. The belt loop and keeper strap were made from 8-9oz Tan Saddle Skirting. Sheath was hand tooled by me, antiqued using a Saddle Tan Antique and finished with Montana Pitch Blend Leather dressing.

This was such a fun project, I'll probably make a tooled sheath for my SOG NW Ranger 2.0 in the near future. Thanks for looking!

Awsome ! Amazing detailed work Heber. These are some of the best I have ever seen. I wish you would try that "other" knife you have had for many years and see if it fits in that by chance......

Thanks Robbie and Carl. Robbie, I'll see what I can do about the other knife and sheath. ;)

Thanks Girlymann! A custom leather sheath for one of those would be way cool. I've wondered how easy it would be to take off the Government's pommel pull the handle, put my own leather washers on it, shape them, then reinstall the pommel.

seeing a screw on the pommel;
there's only one way to find out, i suppose.
and i sure hope it don't get ruin in the process.
would be something, if it could be done though...

With all due respect, I would not touch that screw. I have seen ruined SOG knives where someone disastrously attempted to remove that screw. However, I do remember that this is your knife and you can do to it whatever pleases you. :)

Very nice knife and rig you have there.

Enjoy!

I'm drooling.

Thanks!

Thanks guys! Now that you mention it, I think remember someone at SOG mentioning that the Screw is permanent or that taking off the screw destroys the handle. Probably not something that a hobbyist like me wants to deal with right now. Building a custom sheath for another SOG [Revolver or NW Ranger 2.0] would be more practical. :)

What a great project! That knife is classy, this is actually the first time I've seen this model. Great job on the sheath too.

...this is actually the first time I've seen this model...
it was one of the very earliest from sog knives;
having the same handle as uma's famous "desert dagger"

current sog models from the fixation series, bares this legacy

a sog government-type clone was marketed
by spanish firm aitor, in the early '90s;
having a slightly different, thicker finger guard
it has long since been discontinued...
