I just found these forums a couple weeks ago and I got my first Commander today. It's a 2004 model with the "wave". I think I'm in love. (don't tell my wife). What the heck is the wave anyways....does it mean it's a good flipperopener (if you know what I mean)?

This is really a great knife. Nice and tight lock-up. Maybe the sharpest factory edge I've ever seen on a knife. Serrations that are well done and look relatively easy to sharpen. Fits my hand almost perfectly.

Thanks!

If you're right handed, and have the Commander in your right front pocket, the wave will catch the side of your pocket and open the blade as you draw the knife out.

If you go to the Emerson website you can see videos of the wave in action.

Nice purchase slatts...I was impressed with the edge on my commander, but not as impressed with the one on my cqc-7. I too love the serrations on emersons...i jsut love that they will stay sharp. have fun waving your knife...jsut dont wave it at people!

Hi, sorry to disagree, but the edge of your Comm will be rather thick compared to a thin-edge, flat ground knife. Most of my other knives have thinner edges than my new Comm, which is also 2004.

But it's OK IF you want a tough edge. The Comm blade isn't likely to break as a thin edge, there's one independent german test of blades being noted by EKI, and you can find it on www.knifeforums.com .

I'm happy with my Comm because it can be disassembled totally for cleaning and fooling around with, and I'm told the CS is great.

IMHO, Emerson is "hard use"(as per their publicity) NOT because their knives will beat other knives in lock-strength tests, but because they make knives for self-defense and use in the field. When the knife is full of muck, you can disassemble it totally and clean it, with my other BM and Spydie folders this is either impossible, difficult or voids their warranty.

For self defense, the wave function allows you to put your hand on your knife but still keep it clipped in your pocket, the moment you draw, you have the blade open, the minimum amt of movements or complex actions. You also draw to the back, which reduces chances of being jammed.

Regards
