I have been trying to find small PSK worthy compasses for a while. While I do like the Pyser FB 1065 at $38 it's hard for me to feel like your not getting shafted. The little plastic ones are cheap but some of them aren't even pointing True.
Here's my new addition to my PSK's for my kids and I.

I picked a couple up on ebay at a pretty reasonable cost.

I went through the same thing as you, even bought a few British survival compasses, and even those didn't always point true.

I've settled on getting brass-encased Tru Nord compasses. They are a bit bigger, but I no longer have any complaints as to their performance.

For the small compasses you honestly cannot beat Tru-Nord.

For a real compass get a Cmmenga.

Looks like an old 1/2" Marbles mini compass. They use to sell these to inlay in rifle stocks and knife handles. Randall knives used these before they were discontinued.

Nice compass!

I whole-heartedly agree on the Tru-Nord. Absolutely the best. Love them in a watch pocket.
I have "real" compasses. They are too big for the application by far. Even a small map compass isn't what I was after.

These are the size of an Excedrin tablet and better quality than the others I seen. Because they're this small I can fit them into the micro sized PSK and actually get no flak about carrying them on your person from the entire family. My wife wouldn't carry much of anything, and the boys needed a compass to LEAVE in the kit. Completely separate from a user. Just thought others may be interested, and would be willing to give sellers info.

My advice would be to bite the bullet and make the space for a small baseplate compass.

Sun Company sells the same compasses. They're Japanese made.

This 14mm, Grade AA (highest grade) compass is used by Randall knives today. I installed this compass in my CRK Mountaineer 2. Nice quality, nicely finished, accurate. Some have a tendancy to form bubbles, mine hasn't so far. I hate bubbles. :grumpy:

I looked at these and although I didn't buy from this mfg. I have had my boys try several different ones. Bubbles will form it seems from altitude changes. My youngest was carrying one of these liquid filled plastic numbers at it points almost 35 deg E from what it should. They have Silvas for mapping, and I think a K&M Matchcase will be in their near future as it has a good compass in the cap. But these are what I consider to be standard gear. Daily use stuff. I like the idea of having an un-tampered with PSK that is sealed, tucked away for a rainy day.

1) One of these liquid filled plastic numbers points almost 35 deg E from what it should.

2) I think a K&M Matchcase will be in their near future as it has a good compass in the cap.

1) They probably vary, but mine is dead on with my Silva and Suunto compasses.

2) Wonderful product. I own four. Keith is now using a Suunto compass.
