Hey guys. Been lurking for a bit but finally registered. This is my first post and I wanted to post up my Bushlore.

I've found some good advice around here that finally gave me confidence to commit fully to basically redoing this knife from scratch. I have a few other projects going, and i've been tinkering with my knives for years now. Thanks again to the community.

So here it is: http://imgur.com/a/iNmee

(this is how it came stock - with a pretty crappy edge) http://i.imgur.com/bPt73I3.jpg

Hopefully I can give back a bit on what I've learned in the meanwhile.

edit: strop is an old leather belt I glued to a piece of scrap wood

edit2: shit am i the only guy here that uses sandpaper? lol :(

Nice & Shiny! more details?

Thank you and yes. My goal was a sub 100.00 knife that I could work into my main carry for the woods (boreal forest/northern Rocky's) for hiking, camping, hunting, etc. I wanted to put my sweat in on this one rather then dollars, and learn as I went. Something that would melt wood, shred feather sticks, carve spoons and baton if I needed. Basically the $300.00+ knife that I have not been able to save up for yet.

I found the basics I wanted in a knife called the Condor Bushlore: 1075 steel (1095 preferred), drop point scandi grind at about a 9" length overall with wood handle, fixed blade, sharp spine and it cost 35 bucks. This is basically the shell I would have made if I had the tools to craft a blank.

I received a bead blast finish, very rough grind scandi knife. I wanted to do the entire project by hand so I went to town on the steel with sandpaper. 220, 400, 600, to 1500. Didn't like it, went back to 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000. Didn't like it, went back to 1000, 1500, 2000 and finally the grind was good. Went back and did the rest from 1000 to 3000 and have yet to polish it.

During the process I put about 60 minutes of strop time on the edge as I sanded the scandi, and damaged it. And when the scandi was done, I stropped for another 60 minutes or so until I was happy with the edge and profile. I also put a very slight convex on the left side for feathering. Overall I am very happy this is now my main carry for woods/camping/hiking/hunting. ($5 pocket knife for EDC still)

I ordered another one I enjoyed it so much and am convinced the next will be even better. I was just really excited it turned out so well, wanted to thank you guys and felt in good company, thanks for letting me share.
