My confusing about locks!

Hi,guys!

I'm new comer, a Chinese knives fan, so forgive me of my limited English knowledge!

I've bought the Gerber 600 for many years, and feel better. Recently I search others on Internet, have saw a lots and learn a lots, I appreciate the net tech and you fans infro. A desire for a new forder comes in my mind, but in a confusing about lock's mechanism.

I want to make a list of satisfied products, but I found that's tough! the reasons? Some blades are not thick enough (Benchmad, Emerson, SOG, S&W,Gerber, etc), some others with strongh structure but use liner locks(Strider,Buck,MOD,etc.). I think the Liner locks or frame locks are not hale enough, because their thiner piece of springs, but the lockback design is uncomfortable for single hand operation indeed. The best axis lock only be used in very less products like Bechmade, SOG...

I'm trying to modify the linerlock and axislock, yes, I have new idea to improve on their structure, I want to learn can I email my design to which manufacturer? or who could help me to manufacture and test the new scheme? In the next time, I like to explain my idea! :)

There are a lot of things you can do with a new idea (or an improvement to an existing idea), but you should probably take a look at patenting your idea first. There are very thick books written about international patent law, so you'd probably need a lawyer. As for testing, you should seek out a small-scale operation first. A custom maker, or a tool shop somewhere. Companies like Benchmade and Spyderco are great at R&D, but they probably have enough innovations happening internally that they wouldn't see the point in doing feasibility testing for an outside inventor.

Out of curiosity, what do you do with your knives? Just asking because you said that Benchmade and other companies made their blades too thin...

Oh yes - even though I'm a newbie myself, welcome!

jackwrh,

Welcome to BladeForums!

Your English is excellent.

I don't know anything about patent law. My only suggestion would be to contact another Chinese knife fan on these forums. His forum name is "lachine."

His e-mail address is:

If your thinking of modifying the liner lock, or axis lock you better check other patents first if your interested in patenting your own. There have been many mods to the liner lock over the years, designs, changes, etc. Many that have never even seen production. as far as the axis locks go, you can do this also, but you would be better off checking these first also.

Thanks for your suggestions!
one, I'm only knives lover, don't care of the patent, or get money from it.
two, I'm in agreement with Knife Saber, and had make a decision that, test them by myself.
three, I'll search a lot to learn about the lock patent if I can find them out!

And now, I have narrowed my targets on SOG Vision and Benchmade 4200, 710, but still can not give up MOD Trident, CQD MK I, and some nice Spyderco and "heavymetal" Extrema Ratio Forcrum II T... I like axis lock a lot, but prefer good blade steel like VG-10, ATS-34, BG-42. May you give me some opinions? Thanks a lot beforehand!

Oh yeah, I should say, in a hard situation I use my forder as a screwdriver, sometimes as a tool to open a beer's capsule, I often afraid to break off the tip of my forder, so I thought I should have a real tactical weapon but not children's pencil sharpening knife. So I mentioned the products from Benchmade and Spyderco, etc are not robust enough, sorry!

Lots of the Benchmade Axis Lock knives use 154cm blade steel. That's very similar to the ATS-34 that you mentioned. I also use my knives to open beer's capsule. But i just put the spine underneath it and pry it up. It's safe because the spine is so much thicker than the tip.
Welcome to Blade Forums.
