Hello. You guys have a lot of nice things on these forums, custom made, etc.
Anyways, I wanted a chopper after the lady got her small Wetterlings. But I wanted something with more multi-function for my needs.
All of these cheaper hawks, at minimum, need sharpening. But I decided to go a bit further.
I'm happy with her! Just need now to find a leather sheath. Something that just goes over the blade part and loops to handle. Basic.

-Scrapped off the junk varnish from the wood with a 90deg spine.
-Made 1in marks all the way down the handle to be used for measuring in the field.
-Decorated with soldering iron.
-Sanded head with 150 grit, soaked head in vinegar and tea bags over night to darken, put a real blade on edge.
-Sanded hammer pole to have 90deg sides for ferro strikes.
-drilled hole in handle and cut an old leather belt for lanyard. still allows head to be removed for finer work.
-treated wood with linseed, treated head with olive oil, treated leather with neatsfoot.

We have tons of snow here in the high desert of S Idaho, but can't wait for desert camping!
I'm too new here to post pics, but here are pics.

Nice! I've been wondering how the CRKT axes and hawks perform (specifically the birler), as I do like their knives. Anything to report yet on that front?

Thanks! I ended up getting my leather strop yesterday and man, easy to get a razor, just as condor knives.
This is the only CRKT I own, but with the weight I think it's going to perform well. The wood is real good and solid.
I'd have to say, their steal is that about condor. Easy to sharpen, good for the price.

Btw, Midway right now has this chogan for $31.99 shipped on sale. If anybody wanted it cheaper than amazon.

Got mine from there 2 weeks ago. Going to build a real sheath for it. Original is only good for a pattern.

A dang man. Just ordered the sheath today. lol. I just wanted the 'blade' part of it anyways. I'll see if it's any good.. at least it's leather. idk.
You here in the treasure valley?

Was, I've been in Ohio for 8 miserable years. I'd move tomorrow if I could find a good job there.

I've had my Woods Changan for almost 3 years(?) now. It's handled pretty good, I like the weight of it being that it's heavier than normal hawks. The steel is good quality, with a good heat treat. Haven't broke the original handle but rather bought another one last summer just to mess around with for fun and give it a different look, just cold blued the head the other day and it came out with a nice dark black finish. I need to get some photos of it. If anyone is on the fence about it, get it. It's worth the money and has the performance of a hatchet with the versatility of a hawk. With minor customization you will have something you will love.

Have that sheath. Leather is too thin especially at the belt loop. I'm using the mask to make new one. Got speedy stitch, punches, and scrap leather from hobby lobby.
