Hello. You guys have a lot of nice things on these forums, custom made, etc.
Anyways, I wanted a chopper after the lady got her small Wetterlings. But I wanted something with more multi-function for my needs.
All of these cheaper hawks, at minimum, need sharpening. But I decided to go a bit further.
I'm happy with her! Just need now to find a leather sheath. Something that just goes over the blade part and loops to handle. Basic.
-Scrapped off the junk varnish from the wood with a 90deg spine.
-Made 1in marks all the way down the handle to be used for measuring in the field.
-Decorated with soldering iron.
-Sanded head with 150 grit, soaked head in vinegar and tea bags over night to darken, put a real blade on edge.
-Sanded hammer pole to have 90deg sides for ferro strikes.
-drilled hole in handle and cut an old leather belt for lanyard. still allows head to be removed for finer work.
-treated wood with linseed, treated head with olive oil, treated leather with neatsfoot.
We have tons of snow here in the high desert of S Idaho, but can't wait for desert camping!
I'm too new here to post pics, but here are pics.
