Here is the state of my primary fire kit as of 2/25/14. Are all of my bases covered, or am I missing something?

Hi Joe,
Great kit you have!
You might consider taking some (plastic covered) tampax-tampons and / or simple cotton wool drenched in vaseline in your kit also.
Cheers,
Sobat

Thank you. :) I use to have PJ cotton balls, but I HATE(with a PASSION) petroleum jelly. lol I've used them many times, but when the PJ gets on your hands, it's impossible to get that greasy feeling off... and then everything sticks to your hands. lol :)

I'd add some good old dryer lint, easy easy to light and a small vial of lighter fluid for when you just want the fire to start burning already. I've been tired and cold a few times on long trips and just wanted the dang fire. Vial of lighter fluid some tinder spark and instant fire.

I've had good luck with bert's bees hand salve in place of petroleum jelly. easy enough to get it off your hands, just rub it in. something to think about anyway.
the kit looks pretty good. A reminder on dryer lint, make sure its from cotton clothing, synthetics are full of flame retardant, and wool doesn't like to burn much either.

Yes I agree
I use twezzers on my SAK

So I take small pieces of cotton wool and make small single use size balls
soak them in pharmasutical grade mineral oil and put them in a sealable pill container
Then I pick then out with the twezzers on my SAK
Never need to touch them

You can stuff them in a drink straw and melt the ends closed too. Just cut open and squeeze out like tooth paste.

I keep a tin in my pack year round, way better than pj as far as greasiness. Never tried using it as a fire starter though.

Your kit looks pretty fire worthy. I like to keep smaller versions spread around instead of having it all in one nice little package. Any of you guys that do metalwork can substitute never-dull for PJcotton balls. I always save my ratty old wads of never-dull in film cans and they light right up.

Thanks. Usually, I'll have this kit and then a couple other smaller kits throughout my gear.

I didn't think this deserved its own thread, so I'll just add this here.
For all of you who are a fan of the Bic lighter, but hate the child safety... I made a quick vid showing how to remove it. Of course most probably already know this, but for those that don't, this perfects the action of the Bic.
