It finally came and I couldn't be more pleased.
I opted for polished water buffalo handles, BG-42 blade, no serrations, no finger grooves, nickel bolsters.
The thing looks stunning! Everything was polished to a mirror like sheen. Opening and closing of the blade is very light, and it locks up beautifully. There is a tiny bit of blade play (vert and horiz) when the blade is locked open. I've been told that lockbacks need this play to work properly. The blade is perfectly centered in the handle when closed. And speaking of the handle, it feels great in the hand. A nice reassuring heft, with good length for leverage. This has gotta be the sharpest out of the box blade I've ever seen. Combined with that wicked pointy point, this thing looks like a real splinter pickin' knife.
Unfortunately, I want to use the knife and it's gonna get all scratched up. Oh well, that's they're made for.
I gotta go home and cut something.

oh, great, I manage to put my order out of mind until I receive it and you go and pull this stunt. :D

My 110 has been on order for 2 weeks. It has a BG42 blade, red pickbone scales, and brass bolsters. Or, at least, it will...

Chris

well, if makes you feel any better, I already initiated the knife with my left index finger. cutting down a box for garbage, somehow the finger got in the way. it was no match for the aorementioned "wicked pointy point". the usual trip to the emergency room came next. the only good news is that the microsurgeon thinks he might be able to reattach the severed nerves together. my appt with the microsurgeon is tomorrow.
i'll keep you posted.
you'd think i would've learned after the last 10 or so cuts.
lenny

Ouch. I hope you heal quickly :(. Good luck with the microsurgeon.

BTW, my knife will be waiting for me this afternoon. :D

Edit: I got my knife. I can see how you cut yourself with it. Buck's BG42 is very sharp. This is one purty knife.

Chris

Sounds like a very nice 110, but the someone who told you about the blade play is mistaken. Lockbacks do not need blade play to work properly.

Lenny,
Ouch!!! Fingernails across the chalkboard doesn't bother me in the least but talk about cutting a finger with a knife...Yikes, it gives me the willies big time!

You've gotta' watch those PCKS 110s. They are hungry to cut anything!!! :D

I hear that Buck gets kickbacks from the insurance companies. ;)

So, what's the consensus?
Do lockbacks need a bit of bladeplay to work properly, or not?
Should I send the knife back to Buck?
All you folks out there with 110's, do yours have a bit of play?
I plan on using this thing and it'll only get looser thru the years. Might as well start with a tight one.
thanks,
Lenny

My 110 (brass bolsters) is very tight. No play in any direction. When I first started researching the PCKS 110 on Bladeforums, I found several posts that suggested there is a problem with the NS bolstered knives not being as tight as the brass bolstered ones, especially when combined with a BG42 blade (something about the hard NS and hard BG42 needing much tighter tolerances since there is no "give" to either material). Buck was apparently aware of the issue and was/is working to remedy it. I decided to order mine with brass bolsters based on some of those posts.

I had surgery yesterday.
Only took abouit 1/2 hour of actual surgery time.
2 sutures in the nerve, then a couple for closure.
I'll see him again in 10 days.
right now, it doesn't feel too bad. Didn't even use any of the pain killers yet.
I'll keep you posted.
Lenny

Hey Lenny-

Good luck with the surgery. I'm still recovering from carpal-tunnel surgery two months ago, which at least was not self-inflicted :) Hand surgery can take a little while to heal, hang in there.

Hope this doesn't turn you off of your 110, I have a few, and they are still my most favorite knives.

I've only had bladeplay of any sort in 1 custom 110, which I returned to Buck and was promptly fixed. I see no reason it should be there.

Lenny,
I have two with BG-42 and NS. Neither of them have any blade play.
My second one (Koa wood) wouldn't even wiggle with the lock depressed. THAT is what I call a nice fit and finish.
And just for the record, Dana was the one who made one.

Later,
Alex

OK, y'all convinced me.
I just boxed the 110 up to mail back to Buck tomorrow.
Really wish I didn't have to.
But, if Buck is gonna charge premium prices for a premium knife, I expect premium fit and finish.
I know Joe will make me happy in the end.
BTW, I sent it attn to you Joe.

It took about 2.5 weeks to get mine. I know how you feel about the wait :)

Lenny, I just got my custom 110 in today!! It's exactly like yours except with fingergrooves and the scales are jigged. This thing has NO blade play and locks up solid! I didn't know what to expect with these handles, but I seem to like them more and more each time I play with it. This will definatly find its way to the deer camp this year(along with my new stag handled Dozier hunter!).
