Just finished this set of scales and I've got to say I really liked the way these one turned out.

The G-10 is supposedly black and tan but it looks more like black and bluish gray, I guess the tan is sort of translucent against the black.

This time I applied everything you guys have told me about in previous threads, plus I took the time to go slowly in the steps where screwed up in my previous scales. This is my fourth attempt and I think this time I finally got it right.

I ended up making a few nicks on the liners where I lightly brushed it with the Dremel sanding drum and the small round bit when carving out the Jimping, but Im sure Ill be able to touch it up later on.

Next up will be Yellow and black scales.

Ohh and sorry for the crappy phone pics, I'll try and get some decent one up tomorrow.

Thanks guys, :)

Is it thinner than the OEM scales?

In some points (the front and back ends) I ended up sanding the scales just a tad thinner than the OEM scales. The center is just about the same thickness, but if you look at the original scales you can see they taper from the center out in a circular pattern but that was a little difficult to duplicate freehand. some of the screws sit a little higher because of a combination of that and me not being too aggressive with the counter sinking,

Awesome!
I am messing with my Adamas too but couldn't even dream of making such detailed scales myself. Yours are a winner for sure!
I was thinking of removing the plastic insert at the bottom end and replacing it with a new one made from steel. I plan to shape it in a way that some of it sticks out at the end so that hammering something with the end doesn't mess up the scales. However that hammering then might put more force on the screws.
How does that idea sound?
Thank you

Making scales is not that hard once you get the hang of it, (I haven't got them perfect just yet, but Im happy with the way they are turning out now) The right tools and patience are the most important things. This was only my fourth try at it. One thing I can tell you is that It takes me a few hours to finish them with the tools I have at the moment.

Your Idea sounds good, Im sure it would be quite the challenge to make that insert out of metal. but although the Adamas is quite sturdy, Im not sure how well the screws would hold up to hammering. However the screws in the insert are within stand offs, so my guess is that this would add some strength to the overall structure, It may be more than enough to withstand a few direct blows. Id like too see it when you're done

I got to work on the black and yellow scales this weekend, this time I tried to do more carving to show off the black and yellow stripe pattern.

Should I try the same pattern on the black and gray? Or should I just leave them as they are?

Sorry for the way too large images I tried fiddling with the re sizer but I could'nt get it to upload the resized pics.

Glad the resizer didn't work
The first picture of black yellow in the sun is stunning!

Yeah :D I liked it too!

Leave the black and gray it looks factory :D The black and yellow looks awesome!

The went right back on the knife after I finished taking pictures, I like the black and yellow scales, but I think they look kind of busy with all those stripes, but I didnt just want to do a yellow version of the black gray scales.

Man, these are nice scales. Are there any online vid's about to do this kind of retro fit? You people do not realize how impressive your work is.
Thanks for sharing and I am glad you made the "mistake" of the large photo's, they are great.

Thanks, I've found a few videos on youtube, most are people just working on some scales but not really a tutorial with lots of good tips and techniques. The guys here gave me some really sound advice in this thread.

After finishing a few scales Ive really come to appreciate the work other guys here have been doing. So far I only have two knives, and the scales are relatively flat and fit on flat liners. I dont have to worry too much about fitting, if i drill the holes in the right place, I can just grind the scales down to the liners and end up with the perfect shape. But with other customized knives Ive seen around here the scales are more complex and some even have inserts or multiple materials!!!! :D.

Give it a try one day, its pretty fun.
