Here are a few pics of my custom hammer poll from Dana Turner/Fort Turner. This is my first tomahawk and I'm very pleased. This is a working tomahawk for hiking and camping. I need to wrap the handle with some leather or 550 cord, as it's a little too small in diameter at the end; at least that is my first impression. There may be a perfectly good reason for the small diameter of the handle.

If by "smaller diameter" you mean "tapered towards the bottom of the haft", there is a reason. It's so the haft of the 'hawk can be dropped in through the top of the 'hawk head so that the head wedges itself tighter with every swing of the 'hawk.

Nice 'hawk, by the way.

I know why it's tapered, but where you would actually hold the handle is really small, like it was tapered too much.

Nice looking hawk. Did you have some input on the design? Fort Turner hawks are a favorite of mine. In fact, I just ordered my sixth (Iroquois with hammer poll) a few days ago. As to the handle size, I initially felt it was a bit skinny but through using it have gotten quite used to it. It's no longer an issue for me. My son also felt the same way at first but has since come around to the same feeling I have. Neither of us have small hands. Just start using it and see if it starts to feel right.

I designed the blade portion of it and called Dana. I'm going to wrap the handle with leather or something, which I was planning on anyway just for decoration; maybe add a few brass tacks.

have one as well, nice hawk, I did feel the handle was also a bit small at the bottom.. will have to wrap it one day...

I have a customed poled Iroquois from Dana as well. Great service and quality. I was concerned with the small diameter handle at first as well. But since putting in some time with it, I think I prefer it now. It seems quicker in the hand and I can get a cleaner release when throwing it. Just ordered one of his Ranger Hawks and am patiently waiting for its arrival. Skinner.

If its not a secret could you say how much the price rose from customizing the blade? I am currently ordering a custom hawk from Dana and haven't gotten the reply yet. I am anctious to know how much it's gonna cost. Thanks.

I think he may be at tee Cascade Mountain Men gun show in Monroe, Wa this weekend. I'll stop by and see what he brings this year.

Mine ran $65 or $69, including shipping. It is similar in size to the Iroquois. I think I'm going to get another one soon, with a generous bearded blade.

Wulfshrunting,

I like the tomahawk head you designed. What is the weight of it? How well does it work in chopping and splitting wood? Would Fort Turner be willing make one of your designed tomahawks for others?

Wulfshrunting,

I was wondering about the handle on your hawk. The grain on the handle of axes usually run veritical to the bit. Your custom hawk's handle's grain run horizontal. Is that normal for hawks?

Wulfshrunting, in addition to those question, could you also share how long is the blade on the custom hawk? (from the blade edge to where the eye begins?) Thanks

I just ordered a custom polled, bearded hawk from FT to wiegh around 1.25 lbs. Really looking forward to getting it, but they said it would take about three weeks or so to make the hawk since they have other orders pending.
