Hey fellas

So this isn't technically an Emerson knife topic, but I am posting it here because the original design was inspired by my desire for a custom Emerson, and because I like you fellas here in the Emerson forum the best out of all the BladeForum threads.

I have designed a custom knife, and I am preparing to send it off to Reese Weiland so that it can become a reality. However, I have come to an impasse regarding the construction of the handle: I'm not sure if I want a titanium liner lock with bolsters and scales, or if I want a solid titanium frame lock.

I've exhaustively researched the benefits of both designs, and I still can't decide what I want. So I wanted to get some input from you fellas.

My only limitation is that I DON'T want a hybrid knife (i.e. scale on one side, frame lock on the other) - I like symmetry in my designs, and having a scale on only one side would drive me nuts.

So, what do you guys think? Bolster or frame lock? And if I go with a frame lock, what kind of grooves and patterns (if any) should I ask Reese to grind into the handle?

i like both looks, but i would ultimately choose the all ti framelock.

i like to take my knives apart and clean and maintain them. bolstered knives require a bit more work to care for.

when its finished, can i have it?

Looks a bit like a Persian. I'd say get the bolsters, its YOUR custom knife, go all out.

No problem, Morimoto. I'll be sure to write you into my will. :p

Good eye. It originally began as a slightly modified Emerson Persian - but when Reese told me all of the options I had, I decided to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch. Since I love the Persian's curves, I kept my own design true to that style. I drew up ten or fifteen designs, each a slightly modified version of the one before it, before I felt satisfied with this final design.

I like the bolstered look, but MORIMOTOM has a good point, all Ti is a bit more practical...im sure whatever you go with, you will love:D

I like the idea of a full Ti frame lock but I do like bolstered knives too. I would be tempted to go for a frame lock with inlayed scales on an integral bolster/liner. That could be done on both sides but still keep the lock bar at the same stock thickness. That would also mean your handle slabs are 2 pieces rather than 3 so makes breaking the knife down a bit easier than a knife with seperate bolsters/liners/scales.
If you use hidden screws under the G-10 for securing the scales and spacer you would only need to have 2 maybe 3 screws visible on the handle. I personaly think this looks better on some knives than others but does always tend to give a cleaner look.

Also, I would maybe think about using the spacer to round off the flat part at the but. You could get a lanyard hole through the protruding spacer as well, that would save having to drill the handles. You could also have a couple of spacers for different things, (lanyard spacer, strike spacer, standard flat spacer, filed raised spacer etc...........)

:)

I spoke with Reese again today. He loves the design, and wants to make a second one; just to have! How awesome is that?

I may modify the design on this baby and have him make a full-dress version of it, with Damascus steel and mother of pearl scales. :D

I'd go Ti framelock. Have him put gripping notches in all the usual Emerson spots.

What kind of wait did he guesstimate?

And to think my Demko custom navajah will be done by the end of august... Andrew said 4 months.

It's a variation on the Med Espada but elongated. The blade is .200" CPM154 with 4.5" of cutting edge. It will have the wave opener like its bigger brothers. Think subhilt for the trigger finger groove. The handles will be integral bolster Ti with black G10 scales. Pocket clip mounted L/R tip up leaving 1.5" of butt exposed (LOL) so I can get a decent grip for wave drawing. Lanyard hole...Ti backspacer :D

I hope so... then I can "rest" for a while :D

Andrew said that this knife might be his strongest yet.

Y'hear that everyone? ... Y'all will get a chance to hog Reese to yourself now ;)
