The Story:
Slaytanic (you might know him around here) is a friend and co-worker. He had a Cold Steel Recon in CarbonV with black epoxy finish that had a messed up tip; he had it re-profiled, then hollow ground by Tom Krein. It didn’t have a handle anymore, but it had a nice long, narrow tang and double-guard to work with.
I bought the blade from him – then stripped the black coating off, designed a handle in CAD, and created a prototype handle of wood. We then CNC routed some phenolic pocketed slabs based on that mock-up, and I hand-shaped these, ground the double guard down to a single to match the grips, and made a stainless lanyard tube that passes through the existing tang hole (which also helps secure the slabs). For a final finish, he had the entire knife media blasted for me, to give it an awesome satin sheen.
The result is a perfect sized belt knife, with an incredible blade!
This is the first Kydex sheath I’ve ever made, never having worked with the stuff before; Slaytanic donated a spare piece of Kydex and a Teklok, and I jumped in with both feet and made my own sheath press. Very enjoyable to work with this material! After installing the eyelets and the Teklok for a hybrid carry, I must say I’m pretty satisfied with the results. And I still have all my fingers to show for it.
Many thanks go to Slaytanic for the corroboration on this build!
