Saturday I got together with my dad. Well visiting with him he say's "Did I show you my new knife? I got it at wal mart for $5."

Then he goes on to tell me how he will never use buck knives again becuase he broke the blade cutting a cardboard box and the blades always come loose in the joint. Then of all things he say's as he is holding his new POS "This knife is just as good as any buck"

I'm 35 years old now and as far back as I can remember my dad has always used a 303 buck pocket knife or some kind of buck pocket knife. He has alway's said his buck knife was the best.

He has not used the same 303 over all these years, but I can remember buying him one for x-mas and him not using it for years becuase the 303 he was using still worked fine.

Anyway my dad is not the knife nut that I am, but I was sorry to see him pull out a cheap POS knife.

I told him to give me his 303 he broke and any others he had that were loose and I would send them back to buck for him.

His reply was I threw them all away

I did pull out my Buck 701 to show him and he pulled out each blade and looked it over and then handed it back to me without saying much.

So what should I do?
I really want to get the POS wal-mart pocket knife away from him.

tough postion to be in...hmmm, you could ask him to borrow his POS Wal/mart knife to cut something...then accidentally BREAK it! but make sure you have the new Buck knife in your pocket to replace it!:D
;) good luck!

Get your father to visit PCKS & show him the various Buck 110's available. Let him 'dream' up the right combination for him, offer to buy it for him as a new EDC! If the 110 is to large & heavy, let him look at the 112 or 501, 503, 505!:D Better yet! Just surprise him with one of these Buck's. If he won't accept it, I'll give you my address & I'll dispose of it for you!;) ;)

pahl, If your Dad was using a 303 that was older it
very likely was NOT a Buck made knife!!

You see at the first Buck contracted Camillus / Schrade to make the very early stockmen, trappers, etc. So as you can see it's VERY possible that the knives your Dad was using wasn't Buck's fault at all. ;)

So tell your Dad that the knife you can get him
now will be a true "Buck Knife" :D

P.S. The way Buck makes the 300 series now is way
different than the older contract knives.

chisel,
Great idea!
I won't see him again until the 4th of July. This will give me time to get him something.

Tightwad,
I understand, but to a "non-knife nut" it had the Buck name on it so it was a Buck.

Clydetz,
I think the 110 and 112 would be to big and heavy for him. He likes pocket carry. I have given him a number of Multi-tools and he never has it on him as he don't wear sheaths on his belt.

I may try to find him something in the 700 series.
Today I'am thinking I should have let him keep my 701 when he was looking it over and told him to try it out for awhile.

pahl, As a Dad (57) I can well understand how /why
your Dad might feel and behave the way he is. I
also think he did a good job of raising you that
you care so much about such a small issue.

So, try this, "lend" him your knife or a "new" 300
to "break it in " for you (I'd suggest that you
get a new 300 stockman for him as I don't like the
feel of the 701 either. Something about saw cut
delrin that makes it feel right to me.) Then
"forget" to pickup claiming that you don't like the
feel of the delrin.

Whatever you do......make it his idea to help him
save face. ;)

My Father-in-Law was like that . Hated to sharpen Buck knives. I sharpen for him and and he accepts that fine.
