Hey,

my dad keeps bugging me about this so I thought i'd find out, what exactly IS the blade shape called on your basic SAK (Swiss Army Knife)?

I don't think you can call it spearpoint, you sure can't call it clip, it aint a drop or a tanto or a sheepsfoot or a hook, so what is it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

I think the blade is a spear or drop point. If the point drops below the spine, it is a dropped point. If the point is dripped right to the middle of the blade, you have a spear point. I think every SAK I have seen has had a spear point.

I just checked the Victorinox web site. The point drops to the middle of the blade, so I'd say it is a spear point.

By the way, I think the definitions of drop point and spear point are a little flexible though.

Main blade on a SAK is a spear point (at least all the ones I've seen). A spear point is typically defined as a blade where the spine forms a curve that meets the edge at the centre line or slightly below (A drop point has a curved spine that meets the edge somewhere above the centre line). The 2nd smaller blade is also a spear point, although small spear points that back up a main blade are called pen blades (they were once used to sharpen feather quill pens).

Hope that helps.
