My dad just had his 50th birthday a couple days ago however he is just getting back from vacation and me as well, and he told me his EDC knife for 3 years broke (it was a $50 Smith and Wesson tactical knife) and he used it because my brother and I got him for him a few years ago when we had no knowledge of knives.

I'm asking for your guys' help in getting my dad a folding knife that he can use and hold on to forever

About my dad: He's a police officer and uses some type of S&W tactical knife for work (I think) but doesn't use it in EDC outside of work due to it touching drugs regularly and etc. The knife I'm getting him will not be used on the job for police at all.

He likes thumb studs and said he would be okay with an assisted as well but hasn't owned one before I don't think, but he doesn't think he'd like a thumb hole.

He's a very big guy and has huge hands, so it can't be a mini grip or anything but he also doesn't want a behemoth in his pocket all the time either that's uncomfortable because it's so big.

Plain edge with no serrations, extremely durable preferred. He takes good care of his stuff but if it's a blade steel that corrodes super easy (i'm talking to you opinel lol) that won't work either, moderate corrosion resistance preferred. He will get free sharpening for life from the local knife store so edge retention isn't the most needed thing ever but at least moderate edge retention is hoped for. The most important thing i'd say is that it's tough/durable. A knife that can last him forever.

My budget is $100 (I can stretch this up to $150 with some persuasion with the wife likely, but let's try to keep it closer to max of 100-120 if we can.)

He also wants a nice clip on it too, something that will cling on hard and not fall out easily.

So, what are your thoughts so far?

What more information would be good to help with this? I really want it to be special and something he can absolutely love. He doesn't seem to be very interested in traditional style knives btw (Buck, etc.) and those don't usually have a clip anyways. So let's keep it modern (BM, ZT, etc.)

Let me know your thoughts!

Edit: Just to clarify this is for not on the job, but EDC during normal life. He likes his police knife and just wants to keep it seperate from his outside of police EDC. He's part time so this knife i'm looking to buy him won't get any police activity.

Spyderco endura waved, if he can get used to the spydie hole. Don't judge it till you try it type thing.

Ontario rat 2 maybe.

Cold steel ak47, code 4, lawman, or any of them really.

ETA: ZT is generally more than 100 but on the exchange you can find good deals.

The blade hole opens better than a thumb stud in many people s opinion. See if this is a deal breaker. If not, the Spyderco PM2 is one of my top two recommedations. The other is the Cold Steel American Lawman. Both are great edc size with plenty of handle for large hands, and a blade size good for almost any task without being too large. Both are light but strong. Both with great blade steel ,so he won t be spending too much time getting it resharpened.
AL for 95.00, PM2 for 120.00.
Both of these are a notch up from the Endura and Griptilian, which are also good choices.

I would also say something from Spyderco. A PM2 maybe. I bet he would like the whole once he tries it.

Is a fixed blade a no go ?
Just curious because for a tough blade that will last a lifetime there are a lot of good fixed blade options for under 100$

Buck Momentum or Buck Marksman. The Momentum is slightly smaller and is assisted.
The Marksman is a nonassisted flipper.
I think the Momentum fits better in the pocket.
Either one fits your budget.

I'm gonna say Kershaw Blur in S30v or if you can get your hands on Kershaw Camber.

I also like the Cold Steel recommendations. I'll toss in the Recon model, though it may appear too murdery. :)

If he wear gloves the the Benchmade G10 full size griptilian or a Benchmade 710

He definitely only wants a folder and he was pretty uncomfortable with the idea of a thumb hole. He loves thumb studs and honestly i do too.

I think the Kershaw Knockout would be a great option. I have really big hands and it fits my hands nicely. Also the ZT0350 and ZT0566 are under your $150 new and they are great knives for the money.

He's going to love whatever y'all get him. Try to stay true to his desires, consider introducing him to something new, and spend what you can. If it's a little outside his comfort range, no worries, he'll get used to something new. And as it's not a work knife, he won't have to worry about it filling all those needs.

Too bad the H&K 14715 was discontinued, that would of been perfect imo.

Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter or Goldeneye (if you like the looks) are in the 100-120 range. I like the CS Ultimate Hunter over the Recon and other since I'm not a fan of specific finger grooves in a knife. I prefer a more neutral handle shape like the Ultimate Hunter.

I hate to say it but the Ontario Rat 1 in D2 is a great choice for $40. Maybe a Rat 1 in D2 + nice multitool combo?

Some great deals to be had on recently discontinued ZTs. Not sure how he feels about dedicated flippers though. The 0620 may be worth a look and can be found for around $150.
Large Griptilian or 560 Freek are some good options from Benchmade. You could always get on BM's custom configurator and make him a custom Griptilian.

A big man deserves a huge 5" folder
Consider the Sog knives Spec Elite II...
Japanese quality and steel.
Not heavy at all
It's a serious no nonsense working long folding blade.
It has its design lineage going back to the early
sog knives pentagon boot knife.
It's Essentially, a folding knife version of its popular fixed bladed ancestor.
Hence the similarity in its "neutrally" shaped handle.
It affords the user all the various hand grips
One could possibly apply.
Good luck in the search !
