Hello Folks,

(sorry for the missing r in the title.. the button "r" on my keyboad is a little sticky. Guessed i spilled enough coffee and cokacola on it

- it there is a word wrong, try and adding an r somewhere, it could help)

For the last month I have selected some folders from my collection, to try them all out as carry folder for daily use, and to make a total evaluation of them.

the nominees were:

Gerber SLG 3.25
Rekat SIFU in D-2
Microtech LCC plain stonewash
BM 910S (ex tanto)
BM 710S (deepend the recurve)
BM 750S
CRKT Point Guard large plain.
CRKT M16-3 (alu scales, serrated)
Buck 110 FG
Buck 110 Buckcote

Neat list to choose from ... now you know what i do when i get up ... Choose knives

!

So after a month, I find myself carying the gerber SLG 3.25 and the Rekat SIFU more then any other combo (I always carry two knives).

Why did i carried those two more then any other pair?
1. together they cover the widest range of possible tasks I can imagine for them.
2. Both look good, which is good for showing off.
3. the SIFU can do things other folders can't dream of doing.
4. Both the SIFU and the Gerber were best in edgeholding (The SIFU because it's steel is better, the Gerber because it is thin enough to be an awsome slicer with good steel).

My opinions on the gerber I described earlier here: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002826.html

Additions: it lasts very good.. blade play stays zero, dead center, never touched a liner. Liner doesn't move furthe on the blade tang. Blade liner ramp seems radiussed in an odd way, much like the spyderco starmate. Sharpering is easy, about like Benchmade. Grind is perfect, hollow, by going to flat near the tip. If you start pying with it, you can see the liner bend, but it will not disengage.. in fact, I found no way to get it off the blade except by unlocking the blade as should be. the thumb ramp, the thumb stud,it's all made very ergonomic. i'd really recommend this folder.

SIFU in D-2 :
Excellent folder.. hardly can stop playing with it.. it's so much flicking that thing open. Cutting with it is a dream, the black coating is really smooth. Action is buttesmooth, the huge blade uns dead center and doesn't rub any side. Even when it's harpopping ability fades, it get's sot of a microsaw edge..doesn't feel sharp at all, untill you cut with it. Overall an excellent folder, restricted in use only because of it's size. But that's why i carry two

Why did all the others didn't make it?

1. Most other were concieved as primary blade carry, so they all have a rather large blade, large enough to scare people, but not large enough to be.. well SIFU size !
2. Some flaws :
a. BM 910S (second best after the Gerber SLG 3.25). Excellent action, very usefull blade shape. Just a little big for non-scaring blade. Same place as the Microtech LCC, which is an *E*X*C*E*L*L*E*N*T* knife in quality, probably the best of the list. But the thumb ramp looks wrong, no nice transistion to the blade. Plus it's too big and heavy for second blade.

b. BM 710. Excellent knife, but isn't really at home in my hand, and the clip isn't positionned the way i like 'm. And a little big too. Close second to the stryker

c. BM 750S. My first choice as second blade. Little slippery Ti surface. and just a single thumbstud.. if it only had two (some got one too much?
biggrin.gif
) And of the knives above in this list would be a close call to decide which i would have carried if I were resticted to only one knife. But I am not, so i not gonna cary just one knife

d. CRKT's -> not good enough steel for daily carry. I like to sharpen my knives, but not that much! The AUS 6 is just too soft for me, for the rest the PG would definetely be a competitor. And the M-16 has a too thin liner I think. I haven't been able to make it fail however. And the serrations are too deep.. you really need to rip with them. Gimme spyderco serrations !

e. Buck 110's. Too specific.. I am a student, not a hunter. If I would skin some animals, the buckcote would definetely be my choice, in it's pouch on the belt. Too heavy for daily uban carry. Still, the design has something special that keeps amazing me. And it holds an edge better then Aus-6, whatever Buck uses. The buckcote is probably the best edgeholder in the list.

What's next : Soon, I'll add a SOCOM elite to the list.

This has gotta be the longest topic I ever wrote

Well, thanks for reading it I guess.

Overload for this newbie!!!! Man you guys are all gentlemen and great teachers. What an education. I am a slow learner so I am stuck for now with my spanking new Paragon ATKO Model-8 from PVK (Thanks Josh!!!) and my USP .45 for the hard stuff that might scratch my pretty knive.....wolf
Keep teaching me, I am hooked, addicted, screw guns, love dem KNIVES.....Thank you, I have never talked to finer people than here on the BF.....wolf

Good post Bart and nice pics as well. I didn't find anything to disagree with and I've used or carried all the knives except the Sifu (have one coming based on all the good comments here on the forums) and the BM 750.

I really like my MT LCC but you're correct about it being too heavy and large for a second knife.
