i work construction, and during work i do not often carry my finer knives. I have knives 8x the cost of it, but at work i like to feel free to use and abuse my knife, as well as hand it off. I have beeb carrying a sog stout flk. Very similar to a pillar 3 but has a flipper tab, and is slightly smaller and is chunkier. The heat treat is fantastic (holds an edge almost twice as long as rat 2) both d2; the lockup on the frame lock is fantastic, just thought i would recommend this as a beater that doesnt make you sad when It comes out the pocket. There’s even some fidget factor. Do you guys carry such a knife and what is your go to? Sorry for the rant just genuinely impressed with this sog product .

I carried SOGs for 15 years. Still have my 1999 X-ray vision mini.

However, it's been 9 years since I've owned on other than the aforementioned. I've moved on to better things, and their quality has gone downhill.

My beaters are mostly Mora Companions of some flavor or another. They’ve seen some bad stuff and I’ve never had one break yet.

SOG's products took a nosedive after 2006/2007. But this past two years or so SOG has introduced some new designs and models based on the Axis lock (XR) which show some promise as well as better dsigned fixed blades with better steels. While time will tell, it may be worth taking a quick look at the current products even if just for curiosity's sake.

Honey badger makes some good inexpensive knives. I’ve been carrying one of their knives as a beater work (landscaping) knife

It’s been a long time since I’ve owned a SOG folder. Probably 30 yrs. Had a small SOG boot knife too around that time. One of my first go to gun stores carried the SOG line which made them a purchase of opportunity. I ended up gifting them to friends.

My “beater” is a Rough Rider medium Stockman. It’s stored in the kitchen utility drawer and is basically the indoor small task house knife for me and my family. Other than the badge falling off it keeps being a knife. But I think I’d much rather have an old SOG or a RAT 2 sitting there. Yup, all those pricey super steel blades that I own and a RR gets the call for cutting duties 90% of the time.

SOG seems to be doing better the last few years in terms of getting with the times and producing a better product.

Like others, I haven't owned a SOG is 25+ years. Very similar to Al Mar in that regards.

In the end, if you are happy with your knife, then I'm happy for you.

I don't have a beater knife per se. If I did, it would be a Mora like others have said. I have Moras stashed all over the place including vehicles.

I guess my only real issue with SOG is that they are a little too proud of themselves. Until recently, every SOG I saw had their logo emblazoned all over it. I like my tools a little understated. I hope their recent trend continues...

Ya the quality is pretty awful, but the fore mentioned knife is about what i would expect for a 150 dollar knife and its 45 bucks

Ya they are box store knives, but this particular sog im proud to own. Its just held abuse better than any folder i have had certainly in that price range

Only SOG folder that rented any space in my head was the.Tomcat when it came.out in like '89. Really not much else available at that point in time. Kiku's designs definitely helped them move a few more knives.

Haha exactly. Back when Companions were about $12-14 each, I must have bought the better part of a dozen of them. I've got them in my glove box, hiking packs, break down kit, garage, etc...
