My Damascus Leek came in the mail today, only to find that I couldn't...

I opened the package up and pulled out the Damascus Leek to discover it wa now the sharpest knife I own. I was pumped until when I tried to loosen up the main pivot screw, the part that the screw goes into turned on the other side along with the screw.

So... not only can I not loosen the screw, I can't get the screw loose to take it apart and lubricate and clean it... AND change the Damascus blade to my titanium handled FrankenLeek with the Random Leek blade and titanium handles.

I emailed New Graham Knives, and haven't heard back yet, but I'll call tomorrow...

To top it off, for some reason, I stuck the tip of my Spyderco Cricket into the gap to try and stop the turning and broke it's tip off (hence my other thread)...

What a day...

No, the Damascus Leek I received came tip-down. But, it's very easy to change the orientation with a size 6 Torx wrench, or whatever the six-sided star driver is...

i had the exact same issue-for 5 dollars i will tell you all you need to know-

oh heck im in a good mood-just "stick " a tool between the stainless frame and the pin top(back of pivot) i used a punch from my trusty sak-its a pain to hold bolth but it can be done fairly easy

some people have said that in tip-up, they couldn't get the screw loose. i have had the same exp. what i do is put a MODEST amount of side load on the blade, just enought to get the pivot screw to bind up and come loose. the way i do this is slide open a kitchen drawer and slip the blade in and force down moderately. then loosen the screw. ***please don't break your new knife if you chose to try this. hope this helps

I tried doing the wedge-something-in-there-and-hope-it-unscrews method but it turned but didn't come out like it was stripped or something. I have no idea. I'll email Kershaw next.

Thanks,
Ryan

If you have a soldering iron, you can heat the screw head and that will most times loosen to thread locking adheisive.(along with the wedging thing you're trying.)

Side load pressure, not too much, will bind the female part of the screw enough so you can break the loc tite.

No, I tried the side-load pressure trick as well... :-/ Now luck. It's TOUGH. But then, even when I get it turning when the back isn't... it still doesn't come out. Something must be wrong.

Boil the pivot area about 10 minutes, then with knife open, use a flat edge screwdriver that is padded, or covered with some cloth just to prevent any marring, place screwdriver in blade channel close to pivot as possible and twist to apply pressure, then unscrew. I tried this method about 4 months ago and it worked like a charm.

I'll try that tomorrow and see if I can get it loose. I emailed Kershaw as well as New Graham also. We'll see what happens. I'd rather this not happen and chance breaking the knife... I would be REALLY pissed then.

Thanks again,
Ryan

Before you go off and boil your knife or fabricate some tool... take a rubber band and press firmly on the non screw side of the pivot as you unscrew, this has owrked for me, time and time again.

This is an old thread from 2007 ... also in the wrong forum....
