Well after reading various threads here about fatwood, I finally decided to take out my BK2 for a little fatwood gathering.
It is raining as I drove to the local WMA I used to bow hunt. I have not been back here for about 3.5 years. The dirt roads are all rutted out and there are trees down everywhere from Hurricane Sandy. Evidently F&G has been clearing all the fallen trees that fell across the road as there are cut logs all over the place.
I also took this opportunity to try out my new CRKT Kangee Hawk and Condor 3 Day pack. Also in attendance is an old tree-pruning saw.
The Kangee feels comfortable in my hand and well balanced and bites deep into the wood. The Condor 3 Day pack is well laid out with tons of room and storage, but enough about them.
Basically I was using the Kangee to hack into a piece of wood to check if it had any pitch, then if so I would use the saw to cut off the branch then use the BK 2 to split it up. I was focusing on branches because of the amount of blow downs in the area and it was raining and did I not see any stumps in the area I was in. Most of the trees were snapped in half anyway and gave me access to the branches. Of the ones I found, the closest part of the branch to the trunk had the most pitch.
So far I've only split up one small branch.
Here are a few pics. They are pretty much in chronological order. Hope you guys enjoy.
