For a quick design project we had to improve upon an already good design.

This is my assignment: Spyderco Delica 5

Main Design Considerations:

Blade: I changed the profile to something with more slicing ability. The tip is more
pronounced for detail work and the kick point is smaller to maximize usable cutting area.

Clip: The wire clip allows for more discrete carry while also cutting down on
manufacturing cost.

Lock: The V4’s back lock needed a lot of parts to operate and made disassembly diffacult. I changed the model to a compression lock, which utilized the existing steel liners to create an even stronger lock.

Image: By creating harder lines, the knife becomes more visually distinct. The addition of a larger emblem allows for easier brand recognition while adding a nice graphical element.

Extras: The ability to add a glass breaker adds an extremely useful function to the knife at a minimal cost. This cost is offset by the amounts saved in the new manufacturing
process.

Ergonomics: Enhanced through use of hard edges and extra texturing.

Durability: New lock design is stronger, lighter, and has less parts.

Reliability: In addition to the new lock, this revision uses less screws.

Maintenance: New lock permits for easier disassembly, aided by fewer screws.

Choice of Materials: All materials remain identical to respective roles in previous model.

Construction: Combination of current methods plus those implimented in other designs.

Economy of design: Less holes drilled, steel liner material redesigned into integrated lock.

Aesthetics: Harder lines make knife more appealing.

Graphics: Larger logo aid in brand recognition while adding to the new look.

Instructions: Knife design is straight forward enough to not need instructions.

Perceived value: Lower cost of manufacturing means an even better value.

Envoronmental effects: Waste steel can be reused. Less drilling means less plastic waste.

Packaging: Robust design means minimal reinforcement will be needed.

Marketing: Larger emblem aid in establishing brand identity.

Hope you enjoy!

i saw this on spyderco forums, and I think I've discovered what was making it look a bit off in my head.

Delicas have a completely straight spine, with no sweep. Other than that, wow.

This knife would be perfect for me.
It is an improvement on the delica in every way I'd ever imagined
Take note Sal I would definitely buy one of these.

P.S use VG10

Slightly off-topic, but since you're changing it, I've always wondered why the clips are so long? Mine don't move up and down on my pocket but maybe an inch.

Cool. I like it, except I wouldn't call it a Delica anymore. It's like a hybrid between the Caly3 and Delica4, two of my favorite knives...

If you remember, Sal beefed up the blade of the D4 due to getting back a lot of broken tips and complaints about "brittle" blades. That would be a step back for the general demographic that the D4 is marketed to. BUT... I love the design and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Just... please don't call it the D5.

Can you set the clip a little higher so that the knife will ride lower in the pocket? Is there any way to extend the clip slightly beyond the handle so that the knife is completely concealed in the pocket? If you could do that, you could make the knife almost look like a ballpoint pen in your pocket. I would love that for work. I work in a very formal environment and anything other than fingernail clippers scares people.

Other than that- great looking knife.

On a side note- I would love to see an after market clip that you can substitute on any of the models that would allow you to carry the knife lower in the pocket.

Actually-

Could you incorporate the glassbreaker into the clip? When carried it would end up looking like a ballpoint pen if you did that.

Seems really close to the Paramillie with the exception of the handle material and clip design.

Looks too much like the Caly3. An updated Caly perhaps?

The Blade is very Caly3, but I could easily remidy this by giving it a flatter top profile (like the G10 D4). I SHOULD have done this to tie the new design to the current one more clearly.

Although a fully submerging pocket clip would be the most discrete option, it would make it much harder to withdraw the knife. In addition, the current Caly3 setup is extremely subtle in most circumstances.

The window punch needs to be anchored to a reinforced area, so it must go on the handle somewhere.

In terms of upholding the Delica legacy, the volcano grip FRN in these proportions, quality but not exotic materials, and an affordable price point are what keep this true with the series. The addition of a new type of lock and clip are linear upgrades for the current model.

This was my first project for my course "Product Design 1". I'm a student of Industrial Design, which is a culmination of art, engineering, and business. It's not a "double major". ID is a fully independent career that specializes in products involving high levels of manufacturing and human interaction. We are the ones that design the way your car looks and feels. The engineer is the one that designs how it drives. It's the most fun I could ever have learning!!!

This is my first foray into knife design. I hope to have at least one fully custom design prototyped by the end of the schoolyear.

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming! It's a HUGE part of my learning process!!!
:)

That is really awesome that you are doing this for a course! Please keep us updated on the progress of things.......

Start with .25 inch stock and give it some tip strength, and I'd buy one. :) Ok, sorry, it's a sickness... Which reminds me... TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF TUFF!!!! (repeat ad nauseum)

Very nice Kid. We are honored that you would choose one of our designs to work with.

Interesting concepts.

Looks like a Caly 3 with a compression lock. I like the shape of the handle a lot.

Looks good
