I love my Sharpmaker. But I've also had some good luck trying to free hard sharpen some knives with DMT Diafolds, and have also used them by clamping onto the sharpmaker rods (with better results).

Thinking there has to be a better way to clamp the Dia-fold onto the rods, I got a little inspired to try to create something similar to the sharpmaker.

Using a square wood rod, I cut a 15 degree angle and screwed it onto a small base. Then, I drilled a pocket and glued a magnet into it. The idea is that I can set a dia-fold onto it and hold the dia-fold with one hand, while holding the knife in the other hand.

The magnet I used is strong enough to hold the dia-fold onto the angled guide. It works with both the single sided and dual sided dia-folds.

In practice, I think I need to make a slightly bigger base (I was trying to keep it small overall), and perhaps weigh it down. I think this may make it easier to hold steady.

Here's a pic next to my sharpmaker. I think the angle might be slightly off, but is probably due to slop with the saw that I used.

I bet someone more talented than I am could design it better. Maybe even 3D print something similar.

Nice work, it looks like it will work. Even if you angle is off a little your setup will be consistent.

Awesome! This is what I preach! It's so fulfilling to make your own equipment. Keep it up man. Great work.

Thanks! What I like about this prototype is that it is small, and can easily be stored in a drawer with the Dia-folds.

The idea was small and easy to use- almost like an extension of the dia-fold. Just snap it onto the guide and start sharpening.

I also considered making a bigger one that would have an adjustable angle. May still do it, if I can find the time.
