Got back a couple days ago from an amazing 5-day hiking/camping trip to Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont. In the past I've just carried a varied mix of my dad's old Buck and Case knives. My RC4 is all I had on me, and let me just say how much I enjoyed having it for every task/project. I split hardwood with it, practiced making traps, cut food / cooked with it, and dropped it from waist height with the edge landing right onto a rock (see bottom pic for damage).
My pup, RAT and I on the Long Trail...
Amazing sky...
I did have a bear wander through my camp one night, but this rare forest creature was much more frightening to me..
Never really practiced making traps before, but decided to goof around considering I had my RC4...
Here is the minimal edge chip/roll from dropping onto the rock. I did clean it up a bit with a stone on site and sharpen it when I got home, so you can probably barely see the little indent. I'm amazed at how little damage was done. The coating just has a little wear (which I thought would be much worse after all the chopping/batoning/splitting/etc) and my handle is filthy-mcnasty and stinks like fire and death.
