My dog really pissed me off today

Cash made me extremely angry today. I let him out while I fed my sons dinner before taking them to martial arts class. I left the windows down in my car since it is so hot. I went outside and found both sides of my car scratched from top to bottom. Apparently he decided he wanted to get into the car. There are at least 50 scratches on each side. I called my auto body guy. He said I'm probably looking at about $900 to paint it. I love Cash, but I've never been so tempted to do him physical harm. I didn't, but I would be lying if I told you the thought didn't cross my mind.

Cash. That's one of my dogs name.

That's unfortunate. I have two dogs, and have come to the conclusion that pretty much everything is not going to stay pristine.

Sorry to hear about the auto.
If the dog has not been trained to, not put his paws on the car, then he is not really to blame. He does not understand that you now have to have the car painted and that his actions are the cause.
Only after an animal is trained to do or not to do something is punishment called for.
Most dogs enjoy pleasing the person they work with.

Fred

His training is very similar to what you do for your sons in taking them to martial arts class. They also learn by repetition and praise.

Sadie dog did something similar to the Lincoln I used to have. She was on her leash coming out of the vet's office. A horse trailer was parked next to me and the horse was stomping around. Sadie was so terrified of the horse that she couldn't wait for me to open the door and tried to jump in the car window.

It's just one of those things that happens.

been there, done that.

my wife calls me at the shop the other day to say the dog had ripped the awning off a trailer we had just borrowed....

Turned out the rain knocked it over (it's pretty old/ragged/weak) and Jessie was nibbling on a few leftover strands...

But, I did have some unpleasant thoughts not too dissimilar to yours....

With Sadie's incident, I just called it even for some of the 'bad' things I've done to her - made her wait for a walk, let her water bowl get empty, forgot to scratch her belly at night-night time, made her take a bath, etc., etc.

Even-Steven. Live and let live. Bygones and bygones.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

Try cutting compound and a slow speed polishing mop. As long as the scatches aren't through to sub-layers, this will work.

I had a brittany get bored in my volkswagon...

She ate every single knob in the car.
Ate them. All.

Radio knobs, vent knobs, window knobs, wingvent knobs, glove compartment knob. Half the stick shift knob...gone.

Found little bits of black plastic all over the back yard for days.

Sorry to read that your dog scratched-up your car paint, but maybe you can imagine what my cats have done to my 2 couches...They look like they've both gone though a shredder, yet their "scratching post" looks untouched.

...Darn crazy animals!.:D.

I feel your pain. The day that I bought my new truck, the MINUTE that I pulled into the driveway with my first brand new vehicle ever, my incredibly gorgeous, but not all that bright, Rhodesian Ridgeback came galloping over jumped up and slowly slid and scratched her way down the driver's side door.

Oh well, at least I got the inevitable first scratches out of the way in a hurry.

That being said, scratches, even deep ones, can often be rubbed out with a little compound. Good luck, and give your dog a hug. At this point, he has no idea why you're mad at him.

Is Cash usually allowed to jump in your car through an open window? When you let Cash out, is it into a fenced yard? And your vehicle was parked within the fenced area?

If you left your car where you dog could get to it unsupervised, then you need to be angry with yourself. Cash probably sees the Car as something he gets to (?) go for rides in with you and the boys. It is YOUR car. Cash loves you. Cash wants to be where YOU have been. Not the dog's fault.

UNLESS..... you have previous done obedience training with Cash and trained Cash that jumping up on your car is not allowed. If you haven't, I'm sorry for the scratches, but Cash is not at fault.

Try some polishing compound. (Check to make sure it is compatible with your car's finish)

If the scratches are not too deep it works and is a decent long term solution.

Like Dave said, dogs have been a part of my life since I was an infant. (Just about everything in my life is un-pristene so I just accept that).

I have a few deep ones on my car, done by friends dogs who want to go with me and have not gotten around to polishing them out.

Cash isn't allowed to jump into the car. My yard is fenced with an invisible fence and the car was parked within it. He has never done this before, but the windows are almost always up. I think the rolled down windows piqued his curiosity. I don't think he intentionally scratched it, he has no idea he did anything wrong, thats why I didn't discipline him. He wouldn't know why I was doing it. Did I want to? You bet. I have since parked my car with windows down and watch him. When he starts to get on it, I give him the "leave it" command.

I wonder why Cash suddenly decided the car is of interest? Even with windows up, a dog might jump up to try to look inside, as they often see their human inside it.

I'm certainly Cash will respond and quickly learn the "leave it" command for the car.

Hope the scratches come out and don't require a new paint job.

He is a bird dog and loves to let his nose lead him around. He probably wanted to smell inside the car.

He has had formal obedience training and certainly knows what leave it means. Hopefully it will stick with the car.

Here's how I'd do it. Starting with the mildest compounds, and you can tell I like Meguiar's.

Clay Bar first, then Meguiar's step 3, 2, then 1. If Step 1 won't do it, you can jump up to a true buffing compound- Mother's California Gold scratch remover. Nu-Finish or something heavy-duty like that can work for even deeper scratches, but the heavy removers should all be done by hand.

Once you've found the right one and removed the scratches, work back to the mild steps (down to Meguiar's Step 3) and you should be at a fresh-waxed finish. I've used this system on my car with excellent results.
