These first two photos show the original knife after it was made.

As some of you know, it often drives me nuts to wonder what is underneath the bark of mammoth ivory. Don knows this about me and swore he would NOT give in if I wanted to shave the bark off of this piece. Well- a few repairs and adjustments later, I think he was getting curious as well and did it for me. Some of you will hate me for it, but personally I am happy with it this way and thats what counts. The purpose of the bark was to aid in grip, but really it turned out not to make much difference.

The pocket clip was changed months ago from the one in the Coop image above to a much more stylistic damascus clip.

And if your wondering why the blade looks shorter now.. it is! This knife gets alot of use and is by no means a pocket queen.

Here are a bunch of photos I took for fun and wanted to share. FEEL FREE TO DISCUSS AND CRITICIZE IF YOU WANT.

The blade shape seems to have changed also. From the pictures, I much prefer the original. Why did you not just buy another DHIII more to your liking.

ya didn't go and break the tip off, didja Jon?
I think the damascus clip was a huge improvement, and the resurfaced ivory is really nice.

Jon -- you are beyond hope :)

That said, I like them both, and especially like when those light blues can be found. I admire you're resolve to see what lies beneath.

Good for you. You're like me and my cars: I can't leave well-enough alone. I just can't.

The scales look great this way, too. The clip is more useful and won't show the inherent scratches.

And... there are no mistakes in using knives, only shorter blades! ;)

^^^ This is a high class problem. We should all be so torn!

Good for you Jon as the great thing about custom knives is that you can have it the way you want it, and good for Don as he bends over backwards to insure his supporters are always satisfied.

Jon, you shaved it! The bark is gone! Oh well, it is a Hanson, and you are still admired by me. :)

Gary, this one is to my liking. It was a custom order and I specifically chose the materials, but my preference changed after hands on time. The tip is MUCH stronger now, but doesn't look as nice. Plus its now legal :) Down the line as this knife gets used more and more, I may replace the blade. Not for a long time though. The original shape was a little too fighter influenced and not as good for utilitarian tasks.

Coop- Exactly! Regarding scratches, the damascus clip doesn't show them as easily. I bet the ivory will show them more now. I dropped this thing on concrete more then once and the old bark ivory hid the dents very well.

Life is too short to keep all my knives perfect. My display case is full anyway.

What he said....but it wasn't bad with the barkie surface either.

Jon,

Don't want to re-iterate what's already been posted, just agree.
Congrats on the great changes and thanks for the excellent images.

That's a beautiful folder. I'm taken with this style of knife and this one looks wonderful. I like the new look if the mammoth, personally. Thank you for sharing it.

I just think it is great that you enjoy the knife so much. After all, isn't that one of the points of acquiring custom knives? And it's a nice tribute to Don's work.

I love blue mammoth ivory, and I think the scales looked great "before" and they still look great "after." I also think the Damascus clip was an improvement.

Hope you have many more years of enjoying this knife.

I like the new clip.

I do think you are crazy for shaving down the mammoth. For me, not an improvement, but I much prefer the original dark rougher finish.

Think I am leaning towards the shaved down ivory but both are nice. Love the damascus clip really pulls the whole thing together.

I think you did right with the ivory, but I honestly like the original clip better (though you'll never find a clip on a knife in my pocket, can't stand the things). The new damascus one makes the whole thing busy to me, and the original matched the scales and the liners well. Just my opinion, of course. It's far nicer than the Leek that's my EDC, either way.

Though in either form they are excellent knives I do like the updates a bit more. Congrats.
